Many of us live our lives on auto pilot. We are creatures of habit and we tend to be comfortable but not always happy with that. Is there something you think you should be doing better or differently or are you repeating the same old patterns because...well because that,s what you've always done.Perhaps at New Year you look back and you make the decision that the next year will be different. Perhaps you resolve to stop smoking or drinking so much, maybe to lose weight or just to stop feeling so stressed all the time . It might be that you want to let go of issues from your past that you know are holding you back or physical or psychological pain that won't go away. However, how many times does another year come round and nothing's changed apart from an increasing sense of helplessness.
The main thing that always holds us back is FEAR. We are often told that change is slow and difficult and painful and therefore change becomes a frightening thing. I used to think that the only way people could be helped to change was by seeing a psychotherapist for months or years, working through painful experiences, often things would get worse before they got better but in the end the client would emerge fully 'cured'. Well thats one way of doing it and for those with the time, commitment and finances it works.
There is another way....
Despite having been recognised for hundreds of years and having accumulated increasing amounts of medical evidence, hypnosis is often poorly understood. Some practitioners consider it to be a special defined state, others (including me) consider it to be a naturally occuring state of inner focus which can be utilised for powerful effective change.
Hypnosis is thought to work by altering our state of consciousness in such a way that the analytical left-hand side of the brain is turned off, while the non-analytical right-hand side is made more alert. The conscious control of the mind is inhibited, and the subconscious mind awoken. Often we find ourselves trapped in patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviours which we consider powerless to change no matter how hard we might try at a conscious level, this is because they are controlled by our unconscious mind and this is the part of the mind we need to access in order to bring about long lasting change.
Hypnotherapy aims to re-programme patterns of behaviour within the mind, enabling irrational fears, phobias, negative thoughts and suppressed emotions to be overcome. As the body is released from conscious control during the relaxed trance-like state of hypnosis, breathing becomes slower and deeper, the pulse rate drops and the metabolic rate falls. Similar changes along nervous pathways and hormonal channels enable the sensation of pain to become less acute, and the awareness of unpleasant symptoms to be alleviated.
All hypnosis is essentially self hypnosis, the therapist simply enables the client to enter a trance like state. Almost everyone can reach a suffcient hypnotic state for therapy to be effective.
