Indaba Counselling

I am a person-centred counsellor offering short-term & open-ended therapy in a safe, confidential setting in Nottingham, and am also a Clinical Supervisor . I appreciate that taking the first step to seek counselling can be daunting, and that you need to feel safe and comfortable with your therapist. Perhaps you are unsure about exactly what counselling is? I will work safely with you to explore whatever may be troubling you. I am here to help you with any issues with which you feel you are struggling. Perhaps you have a sense that you just don't want to feel this way anymore. We will work together to enable you to develop your self-awareness and find insights and solutions that are unique and empowering for you.

You may be affected by a specific trauma or a general sense of anxiety, anger or depression. Perhaps you are struggling in a relationship, be that with a partner or another family member, or you may wish to build your confidence and self-esteem. My specialisation is bereavement and loss in all its forms, such as difficulties faced following your loss of a job, perhaps your home, or possibly a relationship. Following on from 13 years experience as a secondary school teacher, I have a special affinity for working with young people, and recognise the emotional challenges that can hinder the development of their full potential.

There is no problem that is too small because if it matters to you then it is a valid issue for counselling. I will listen respectfully and compassionately and support you as you develop your self-awareness and find insights and solutions that are unique and empowering for you. Without judging you or offering advice I will seek to support you as you try to make sense of your feelings.

I also am experienced in online counselling, Skype, and telephone counselling, and in this way geography does not have to be a barrier to you accessing therapy.

Our first session is FREE to give you space to decide if you feel comfortable that I am the right counsellor for you. In our first session we will talk through your expectation of counselling, and I will answer any questions you may have, especially if you have not experienced therapy before.

SUPERVISION:
I am a Clinical Supervisor and I practise a Person-Centred approach. I see supervision as a dynamic working alliance between myself and a counsellor, and a joint exploration of material presented by the supervisee. I practise a Person-Centred approach and facilitate an opportunity for a therapist to reflect on their practise, receive feedback and encouragement, and where appropriate, guidance. In Person-Centred Supervision, the counsellor brings themselves such that the focus is largely on the counsellor as opposed to the client. My object is to enable the counsellor to gain in ethical competence, confidence, compassion and creativity, so as to be able to give the best possible emotional and therapeutic support to their clients. I encourage a constant curiosity so as to avoid complacency and to promote constant growth and self-awareness around emotional responses and how these impact in the therapy room.

I encourage supervisees to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding as counsellors, and to reflect on and evaluate their practise. I believe in providing a therapeutic space that offers a non-judgemental environment as it affords an opportunity to address thoughts and feelings that arise from client work. In line with this I assist in monitoring standards and ethics of practise, adhering to the BACP Ethical framework.

Testimonials

My experience working with Stephanie has been one of a woman who couples altruistic enthusiasm with hard work. She offers me encouragement and inspiration, and brings her considerable experience and talents to bear on my cases when need be. Good-natured and very pleasant to work with, her unequivocal empathy and knowledge allow her to approach each case with the required sensitivity. Anna

Stephanie’s ability to instil confidence and self-compassion in our supervision session is what I value the most in our alliance. She encourages me to continuously reflect on my way of being with my client but also provides essential guidance on developing a creative ethical practice. Since I’ve started working with Stephanie, I’ve gained more insight about building a therapeutic relationship with my clients – this is a learning outcome for me. As a young counsellor, I know that I can trust her skills, experience and professionalism to guide me through the challenges of my work. Also, Stephanie remains always accessible as a person and as a supervisor for support. I look forward to continuing working with her for many years to come. Emmanuel
