About Us

Barley Hall is a medieval building in the city centre of York that had been concealed under a rubble of derelict offices until the 1980s, when it was then excavated and a medieval townhouse was revealed. It was originally the townhouse of the Priors of Nostell but it later became inhabited by Alderman William Snawsell, goldsmith and Mayor of York. It has been restored to how it would have looked in his time towards the end of the 15th century. It is now open for tours.

    Stunning Example of Medieval townhouse
    business
Barley Hall is a completely restored 14 - 15th Century Medieval townhouse. This museum's novel approach is to recreate the hall exactly as it would have been seen by contemporary medieval people. Unlike other museums with expensive and delicate originals behind glass, this museum uses recreations based off of originals and encourages visitors to sit on the furniture and handle all of the items. The effect is to see the past come alive right before your eyes. Absolutely critical to visit if you are interested in medieval studies. One note, though. We visited in September 2004. At that time only the pantry, buttery, and main hall were completely furnished. Other rooms were still bare and waiting for furnishments to be complete. Still check it out, but plan to visit in a few years when the entire house will be decorated.
