Book your soil sampling for spring

Some of the soil sampling due pre Christmas was not done because of the severe weather and frozen conditions, so there will be fewer days to complete spring soil sampling. Fertiliser costs can only be optimised if there are good, recent soil sample results for calculations on crop demand and nutrient needed.Book your slot for spring soil sampling by Willington Crop Services to optimise your fertiliser requirements and usage.

Soil Sampling to Protect your Farm Assets

Soil is a key asset on all farms. And reports that some farmers are jepardising this basic farm asset is difficult to understand. The soil is a strange beast, but no matter what soil type, if crops are grown on and in the soil, the natural fertility and nutrients within the soil will be depleted as crops extract the nutrients they need to grow and flourish. Depleting the soil of nutrients is easy and soils can quickly drop in fertility whereas to build a soil fertility up takes many years to get even a small increase. All nutrients within a crop plant are essential to its growth and if any are in short supply whilst the crop is growing, they will restrict growth. Some nutrients are needed in greater amounts than others, macro nutrients being nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and magnesium with micro nutrients being trace elemnts including zinc, copper, boron, manganese etc.. Any of these nutrients can become the most important nutrient to a plant if it is in short supply. But typically the macro nutrients are more likely to limit crop growth in most instances. And soil sampling of farm fields would normally test for potassium, phosphorus and magnesium along with pH for acidity. All fields on a farm should be soil sampled at least every 4 years to ensure the correct fertilizer is applied for optimum crop growth and yields as well as to maintain field fertility. Specialist companies can sample fields quickly and reliably such as Willington Crop Services specialists in GPS soil sampling of farm fields and conventional soil sampling with nutrient management key to results that are returned.
