About

Conditions we treat

Traumatic Brain Injury – may often occur in association with other serious injury as a result of, eg , a fall or road traffic accident. Fatigue, balance, co-ordination and concentration difficulties are common problems even after mild brain injury.

Cerebral Palsy (CP) – this is a type of traumatic brain injury occurring at or around the time of birth, often owing to a temporary lack of oxygen.

Parkinson’s Disease – this is a degenerative condition where certain brain cells, deep in the brain, fail to produce a vital chemical called Dopamine. This can reduce the brain’s ability to both start and adjust movement, resulting in tremor and a characteristically shuffling type of a walking pattern.

Stroke – this arises from a bleed or other obstruction to the circulation in the brain. It results in the loss of a localized area of brain tissue around the affected area. If the stroke occurs in the right side of the brain, movement and sensation on the left side of the body is affected (and vice versa).

Spinal cord injury – this can arise from trauma or degenerative causes and can be partial or total. The symptoms relate to the level at which the spinal cord is affected – for example arm function and feeling may be spared if the injury is lower down the back.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) – Myelin covers the main nerves and is also present in parts of the brain and spinal cord. It acts as a form of electrical insulation to help efficient nerve conduction in the body. In MS flare-ups, sections of the myelin can become inflamed; and later degenerate. These inflammatory and degenerative processes reduce the speed and effectiveness of nerve signal conduction. Symptoms will again depend on the location and severity of the damage, and on relapse and remission phases of the disease.

Developmental Co-ordination Disorder – some children have difficulties with co-ordination and planning their movements and benefit from an approach designed to help them to integrate their sensory input and structure their motor skills.

Vestibular problems - the vestibular system is located in the inner ear and helps us to balance. It gets a special mention here as this is an often overlooked aspect of balance problems in Neurology, that can respond very well to Neuro Physiotherapy intervention.

Neurological rehabilitation

Overview of our Neurology System

In a nutshell, our neurology system detects what’s happening inside and outside of us; then relays the information and enables a quick and smooth response. This is done via neural pathways linking the brain with the body via the spinal cord. The linkage is very complicated.

Our brain is the centre of our neurological system. It not only generates the signals to move the body but also modifies the signals to refine those movements. The brain also senses messages from our different body parts and relays these messages to our muscles so that we move towards or away from the stimulus.

The brain and inner ear not only detect the position of our head, joints and muscles; they also work smoothly with our spinal reflexes that automatically kick in to adjust the tone in our muscles as we change position.

Our brain also stores and retrieves memories; and runs our background life support systems without us having to remember to, for example, breathing and regulating circulation. Our spinal cord connects the brain with the body.

Most of this generation and adjustment of movement normally happens automatically without us having to give it a second thought.

Injury to, or degeneration of, any of these parts of the system can cause problems. Symptoms can vary depending on the severity and location of the damage, but essentially when there is a neurological problem, what used to be automatic, becomes something that needs a lot more thought and energy to do.

Understanding the basic structure and function can help to explain the symptoms which can vary from occasional difficulties with co-ordination and balance, to full-blown paralysis. Here at Adams Neuro Physiotherapy Ltd we have many years of experience of dealing with both subtle and complex neurological problems. We give clear guidance as to what will help and what’s a realistic plan of action.

Who we help

INDIVIDUALS - Your own specialist Neuro Physiotherapist arranges to see you in your own home, not in a clinic, at a time to suit you. This is to fully understand what difficulties you are having on a day to day basis. For example, we can see you sitting in your own chair and how you get out of it. You get to show and explain what you want to be able to do better. A comprehensive treatment plan is agreed and produced, focusing on realistic solutions to your problems. You, your carers (and family members when appropriate) are taught how to follow the plan.

This is followed up by sending you detailed instructions of what has been taught, including picture based exercise examples, video or other media to suit you. Re-assessment is at agreed intervals, to adjust the programme as goals are achieved and new ones are set.
CASE MANAGERS/SOLICITORS -

Case managers & Solicitors
We specialise in assessment and rehabilitation after traumatic brain injury, including cerebral palsy and balance problems. We are very familiar with acting as the treating therapist within the medico-legal arena. Providing we have the client’s consent, we send you rehabilitation reports at the intervals you need to facilitate the smooth running of the case.

Do you need a specialist Moving and Handling assessment and training for the client and care team? Several of our Team members are also qualified Moving and Handling assessors/trainers and this particular combination of skills is proving to be particularly helpful when resolving complex and at times sensitive, moving and handling issues.

Many of our clients have a complex combination of orthopaedic, neurological, behavioural and cognitive difficulties. We welcome referrals for clients at all levels of ability, and at all stages of their rehabilitation journey:-

Fully dependent, requiring 24hr care. Clients in this ability group, and their care team, benefit from our advice for management of their posture, muscle tone, guidance about appropriate sensory input and respiratory care over the 24 hr period.

Daily care required. Clients may be experiencing some difficulties with balance, muscle weakness, co-ordination, tight muscles and stiff joints that are reducing their levels of independence. We can formulate specific exercise programmes to address these difficulties and improve the person’s independence.

Intermittent guidance needed. Clients in this group may have already achieved an apparently very impressive level of physical recovery but may have difficulties organising themselves or pacing their activities appropriately. They may also have residual weakness, balance, pain or co-ordination problems which add to their fatigue. Our input can help them to learn how to move more efficiently. We can also ensure that any gym programmes or other vocational rehabilitation activities being undertaken are as beneficial as they can be, taking the person’s goals and limitations into account.
NHS/CARE HOMES -

NHS organisation and funding of local community physiotherapy services tends to vary from one area to another, in terms of availability, experience and flexibility of the service provided.

If your client :

Has urgent, complex problems that if left unaddressed, threaten to escalate the cost of care
Needs an experienced community neuro physiotherapist to solve these problems
And you are unable to access this level of input via the NHS

Then please consider that it may be a cost-effective alternative for you to source our highly specialised flexible service.
