About

About Us

Friendly family osteopathic clinic, covering all general health problems with particular interests in pregnancy/child osteopathy. Other areas of expertise include cranial and visceral osteopathy. Parking lot in front.

Why visit an Osteopath?

People usually visit an osteopath when they have pain - back pain, joint pain, muscle pain, headache etc. The pain may be caused by a sudden injury - or it may simply be a build up of postural or emotional strain. Osteopathy is effective at providing relief from pain, as well as increasing the rate of healing (and therefore return to work / sport).

However, you do not have to be in pain to benefit. Dysfunction can creep in before pain is felt - for example, runners may notice a decrease in stride length; others may experience eye strain or lack of concentration at work. Mechanical dysfunctions have a profound effect on all systems of the body. By restoring function we not only provide immediate help with distress and disease, but also encourage optimum health for a lifetime.

The Clinic

Osteopathy is an established recognised system of diagnosis and treatment, which lays its main emphasis on the structural and functional integrity of the body. It is distinctive by the fact that it recognises that much of the pain and disability which we suffer stems from abnormalities in the function of the body structure as well as damage caused to it by disease. General Osteopathic Council (2001)

Osteopathic Consultation

At the initial consultation you will be asked about any current health problems and relevant medical history. This will help the practitioner gain insight into your general health, and how your body copes with internal and external stresses.

The osteopath will then examine your body framework. Usually at this stage you will be asked to remove outer clothes. The actual examination will depend on your symptoms. For example, it may include neurological or circulatory tests. It will always include palpation, which is a way of feeling the body tissues to identify problem areas. The areas around the spine, and local to where you experience symptoms, are likely to be palpated.

The osteopath will then discuss their findings with you, and tell you what treatment is most likely to benefit you. It may involve you attending several sessions. The practitioner will use a variety of treatment approaches, from manipulation through soft tissue work and more subtle techniques (e.g. functional, visceral & cranial) according to your needs, as well as your preference.
