Good week

Monday, replaced flushing mechanism on toilet that was leaking; replaced light switch in bathroom and dimmer switch in lounge. Also went back to finish off the shower pump we did last week, and tidied up the wiring; also replaced the bathroom light.Tuesday rewired a telephone extension for a pensioner - BT said they could not do it for 2 months, and were going to charge £145. Also checked a couple of her electric fires and extension leads that the carer was concerned about.then off to a repair a leak on the central heating for a customer, found carpet absolutely soaked; drained pipework, cut out damaged valve, fitted new pipe and valve. Re-programmed the wireless thermostat - downloaded the instructions from the internet onto my phone while there, wonderful this technology!Wednesday, boiler strip down and service, and drain system to change thermostatic radiator valve that was sticking - found it had actually been leaking around the spindle. Added inhibitor, system seemed fairly clean and would like to keep it that way.Thursday went to the plumbing show - got a free tour of Wembley Stadium while there (did you know they have 2600 toilets, i for every 33 spectators? keep a plumber busy!) got to look at some of the new boilers, and talked to some guys about the new digital shower pumps, fitted one a while ago and am thinking of recommending some more - 5 year guarantee would save me going back to sort anything out.Friday, fitted a positive pressure ventilation system to a house that is suffering from appalling condensation, they never open windows and won't use the noisy extractors they had fitted by someone else last year. surveyed as well as they want an electric shower fitted ASAP and accepted my estimate. These PPV are good, they used them in Carlisle to dry out houses after the floods. Got a customer to get one 5 years ago, never had a drop of condensation since. Very cheap to run, and not bad to fit - they go up in the loft and cut a hole for the outlet in hte landing ceiling. Now they just have to decorate to get rid of the mould!Then off to Richmond and check an inset gas fire that the builder could not get to work. Phone the manufacturers, who email the instructions to me, so that i can service. needs a new igniter, but expensive, so recommended customer buy a gas lighter for £2.99 from Robert Dyas. Problem solved! wanted to call in to a flat where the hall lights don't work, rang customer but he was still at work, so home a bit earlier and get started on the paperwork.

Busy day!

3 landlords safety checks this morning - elderly tenants who have kept their cookers looking like new, although must be 30 years old, and the gas fires even older! For peace of mind, did carbon monoxide test with an electronic analyser, all clear so feel safe to leave for another year!Then a leak from a flat into the shop below - traced it to blocked waste pipe that the washing machine empties into. Took apart and cleaned, then ran a hot wash to help clear the pipe. These low temperature washes allow build up in the waste pipes!They also had a broken window - landlord asked me to organise repair so called out a glazing company and arranged time with tenant for job to be done.
