“Human factors involves the study of all aspects of the way humans relate to the world around them, with the aim of improving safety, operational performance and job satisfaction.“
All of Atrainability's consultants honed their skills by developing and presenting human factors courses within the aviation, military and sports industries. They have now all added to that experience as a result of engaging in research, training and coaching in many areas of healthcare over the last 12 years.
It must always be recognised that the vast majority of those who work in the NHS demonstrate profound levels of skill, expertise and professionalism on a daily basis. Research into human factors demonstrates that however professional and dedicated, no one is immune from making errors. The best people make some of the worst errors - dedication and academic excellence do not provide immunity against the unthinkable happening. We know that we will never prevent all unavoidable error but our work together with the latest research in the area of human performance has been able to identify several unique and important facts: Experts and novices make similar errors for very different reasons. The most error provoking situations and conditions can be identified very accurately. Now that we know why, when and how errors happen we are better able to train teams to avoid, trap or mitigate the effects of such errors.
Atrainability first developed their healthcare human factors courses with the Royal College of Surgeons in the early part of the last decade. The style and content of our interactive training was novel but rapidly gained acceptance and was thus developed in other areas of healthcare. The innovative content and style of all our training and coaching has been the hallmark of our success. Innovation continues in many areas of research and also by our involvement in co-running the acclaimed Risky Business events (www.risky-business.com)
In addition to the safety improvements that our training interventions are designed to deliver, there are also sound financial benefits. Apart from the obvious savings in litigation as a result of medical error there have been measured improvements in operative list durations as a result of early identification of equipment, staffing and patient issues. Our researched Non Technical Skills framework (NOTECHS) developed from the ground breaking work in aviation has allowed us to introduce a unique assessment tool for observing, training and developing effective multidisciplinary practice in simulated and live situations.
While we know and accept that other companies are progressing similar training within the NHS we firmly believe that our approach has consistently been successful in many healthcare environments. The feedback we have received has been exceptional and where our interventions have been thoughtfully considered, planned and executed by those initiating the training the results have been outstanding. Earl Howe, Minister for QIPP, made the opening address at Risky Business in 2010. His words were: “We need to fashion a vibrant, creative NHS that really fizzes with ideas of how to improve quality and how to reduce costs..." Feedback from our courses indicates that this is exactly what we at Atrainability achieve.

Example testimonial
The Atrainability team have mastered the technique of translating and communicating the learning messages from Aviation to Healthcare very effectively. The North East Strategic Health Authority has worked closely with Atrainability for the last 2 years and they have been heavily involved in our Safer Care North East Programme. Atrainability have then supported this implementation by providing coaching to these trainers and their teams in the clinical setting at the frontline and human factors understanding is becoming common place in our clinical areas. We are seeing some positive changes in the North East and would highly recommend such an approach to others. We still have staff contacting us asking when Atrainability are next coming to the North East!
