What is remapping?
Nearly all modern petrol and diesel vehicles from cars to vans, buses to lorries, tractors to motorbikes have and ECU (Electronic control unit) or PCM (Powertrain control module). These are computers that control the running of the engine. They receive input data from dozens of sensors around the engine and vehicle, then process that data with the use of maps which are in effect graphs to make thousands of calculations per second like in a petrol engine – when to ignite the spark plugs, in all engines – precisely when and what quantity of fuel to inject, how much boost pressure to apply in turbocharged or supercharged engines, the list goes on.
Older vehicles were tuned by making mechanical adjustments to carburettors, fuel pumps and ignition timing.
When electronic fuel injection became popular in the mid 1980s and pretty much standard in the early 1990s, vehicles were tuned by replacing the microchip inside the ECU that contained the maps with a modified microchip. This is commonly called “Chipping" or “Chip tuning".
From 1996 onwards most vehicles were built with a diagnostic socket or OBD (On-board diagnostic) connector to allow workshops to use computers to communicate with the vehicles computers to diagnose faults. Most remapping today is carried out by connecting a computer to the vehicle and uploading modified software to enhance the vehicle's performance and/or economy.
