Ridiculously poor standards of cleanliness!

We stayed at Toad for less than an hour. We have two small dogs at home and no matter how muddy and wet they get our home never smells, looks, or feels as grimy as Toad Hall did. We arrived on (2/2/13). On entering, the cottage smelt repulsive. Now please don't misunderstand, I'm a country lass and fully expect a property on a working farm to have the usual farm smells, spiders and extra dust. Toad Hall however was musty and stunk of wet dog. Sue the proprietor then explained to us that the farm has a number of cats that are "sofa surfers" (quote). My partner is highly allergic to cats and within minutes began to itch and had eyes that were beginning to swell. No where on the website does it state that the farm animals have free reign around the cottages! We unpacked the car hoping to make the best of the situation and allowed our dogs to explore. On initial inspection we were gobsmacked. Toad Hall was filthy! - no evidence of hoovering with hair and general dirt covering the rug - food stains dried onto the sofas (these are washable covers) - dried food on cutlery - greasy handles on kitchen cupboards - Ridiculous levels of dust in the corners and at the bottom of the stairs - a filthy bathroom floor (I wiped a tile with a baby wipe to discover a red film of grime which resembled blood!!) - grease splatters over the bedroom radiator - a moth eaten pull out bed in the cupboard in the master bedroom Every room smelt vile. We attempted to contact Sue via phone without success. At this stage we had already googled alternative dog friendly accommodation and luckily managed to secure availability at a nearby pet friendly cottage. (I am writing this from the comfort of there now, a very dog friendly cottage in an ambience of cleanliness and comfort). We had both agreed that we could not stay in Toad Hall. We are not snooty by any stretch but we have standards and Toad Hall fell way, way below them! We could not relax there at all and in all honesty were concerned for our dogs safety as well as our own, we genuinely would not be surprised if the place was crawling with fleas. The placement of furniture was also dangerous. The stairs are steep and there is a bannister separating the lounge area from the stairs. The sofa is placed next to the bannister defeating the object of this safety measure as any child who likes to climb on the back of the sofa (and dogs for that matter) could easily fall and seriously injure themselves! When we made contact with Sue we explained all of the issues. At first she was adamant that we would not be getting any of our money back however after pointing out all of the issues (including the lack of wifi that is advertised) she agreed to pay back the majority of our fee. Boturnell Barns could be a lovely place, sadly the horrifically poor standard of cleanliness makes the place a health hazard.

We stayed (very briefly) in Toad Hall in June 2011. The experience was so bad we left by 9am the following morning. The place smelt of wet dog and damp and there were flies everywhere. The oven was so old we had to get the owner to come and check it was on because the lights were broken so you couldnt tell. Everytime you flushed the toilet water leaked on the floor - the house was filthy with dog hair and dirt everywhere. My dog ate something of the floor I dread to think what it was. The garden was on a slope which meant it was unusable and the grass was knee high - I dont know how any previous occupants dog mess could of been found! The "enclosed" garden gate was broken which left a gap our small dog could easily of escaped from and the outside furniture was out of the garden by the car. After we left we e-mailed the owner who was very rude and dismissive - she did not care now she had our money - telling us it was our fault for not telling her what to fix - short of knocking it down and buliding it new im not sure what she could of done. Needless to say we did not return the christmas card we had from them this year. I do not believe being dog friendly should be in lieu of cleanilness and if you dont either I would never stay here.

I very much disagree with the review from Brian L i was introduced to Boturnell by a friend and have been down 3 times in 2011 and am already looking at this years hols the accommodation is as stated converted barns that provide comfort and is perfectly functional if you want to be served hand and foot book into a hotel. The staff and owner Sue are friendly and help full they have awards for recycling and green holidays, the animals are rescued one cockeral is backward and crows at night but in my opinion if you have been down the woods dog walk you will be to relaxed and tired to be bothered i was't. The washing machine and dryer is in a shower room and is on a donation basis and works well we try to clean the provided throws before we leave as we want to help if you want a good holiday with your dog try it we recommend them to all our friends.

Poor accomodation

The cottages are converted out houses with little natural light. There was damp in the bedrooms (we stayed in Toad Hall) which are downstairs. The damp was so bad, had to move mattress up stairs. Other issues where flies everywhere, poor parking, on arrival no welcome – more of annoyance from owners, and old settees that were rock hard. There cottage was very dirty, and looked as it was not cleaned for some time. I am 6'3'' and could not stand up in the shower as ceiling was to low. There was outdoor patio furniture which was dirty and rusted. We had use of a washing machine and dryer – for a charge which was also dirty. I could go on, but you must be bored by now. Have spoken to the other guests who were staying there at the time, and they felt the same way. We paid £500 (mid-season) for a week. At this price, you expect more then this. Your site seems like a reputable site, and I though you should know and maybe reconsider advertising there cottages.
