Amalgam fillings

Dental amalgam is a dental filling material used to fill cavities caused by tooth decay. It has been used for more than 150 years in hundreds of millions of patients. Amalgam is a mixture of metals, consisting of liquid mercury and a powdered alloy composed of silver, tin, and copper. Approximately 50% of dental amalgam is elemental mercury by weight. Dental amalgam fillings are also known as “silver fillings" because of their silver-like appearance.

Gold fillings

Are constructed in a laboratory then cemented in place, they are strong a durable.

Why choose it?

Dental amalgam fillings are strong and long-lasting, so they are less likely to break than some other types of fillings. Dental amalgam is the least expensive type of filling material.

Disadvantages

More tooth tissue is removed.

1% of people can have an allergy.

Sliver fillings carry a stigma but have been placed in millions of teeth for over 100 years
The British Dental Health Foundation and other agencies say there is no proof they cause
harm.

Other prominent agencies that have upheld the safety and utility of amalgam in recent
years include the World Health Organization and FDI World Dental Federation2, Swedish
Medical Research Council3, and the US Food and Drug Administration.

White Fillings

A composite/resin filling is a tooth-colored plastic and glass mixture used to restore decayed teeth. Composites are also used for cosmetic improvements of the smile by changing the color of the teeth or reshaping disfigured teeth.

How is a white filling placed?

Following tooth preparation, our dentist places the composite in layers, using a light to harden each layer. When the process is finished, the dentist will shape the composite to fit the tooth. The dentist then polishes the composite to prevent staining and early wear.

What are the advantages of composites?

Aesthetics are the main advantage of composites, shades are used to create a color nearly identical to that of the actual tooth. Composites bond to the tooth to support the remaining tooth structure, which helps to prevent breakage.

What are the disadvantages?

After receiving a composite, a patient may experience postoperative sensitivity. Also, the shade of the composite can change slightly if the patient drinks tea, coffee or other staining foods. Composites tend to wear out sooner than silver fillings in larger cavities, although they hold up as well in small cavities.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF PLACING NEW FILLINGS

Sensitivity can be present after a filling has been placed. It can present with air/sweet things and sometimes pressure. These signs should subside within a few days. However if it is prolonged please contact your dentist. It may be that the filling is high and needs to be adjusted. If decay is present and close to the nerve of the tooth there is a chance that it may unsettle the nerve. In most cases they will settle but it is possible it will require root filling.

In order for your fillings to last and protect the tooth, you need to maintain good oral hygiene, twice daily bushing/flossing and have a good balanced diet and avoid prolonged sugary food and drinks. Visit the dentist every 6 months.

Root Fillings

Root canal treatment, is required when the nerve or blood supply of the tooth (the pulp) becomes damaged, through trauma or decay. It degenerates or becomes infected,The affected pulp is removed, the root canal is cleaned and then filled and sealed, to prevent any further infection occurring. Some front teeth have a single canal but many have two, three or more canals.

Root treatments carry a stigma but they nowhere near as traumatic as advertised. From a treatment point of view they do take a little more time but with care there is no reason why you need to fear them.

It is important to treat a damaged pulp because if left, it can become acutely infected, leading to an abscess, significant discomfort and if there is no drainage the tooth may need to be removed. A root filling can be completed by the dentist, you can also be referred to a specialist. The first step is to treat any acute infection, which may involve antibiotics but should also include if possible, the removal of the damaged pulp. An abscess may also be drained at this time. Rubber dam may be placed around the tooth to isolate it from the rest of the mouth. The dentist or specialist then uses a antiseptic irrigant and a selection of fine instruments are used clean out the root canal or canals, removing traces of the infected pulp, and shaping it ready for the filling. Radiographs will be taken to judge the length of
the root canals.

A temporary filling may placed and the tooth left to settle. At a further visit the tooth is checked and if the infection has cleared a permanent root filling is placed from the root canal to seal it up and prevent re-infection. Some dentists prefer to do the root treatment at a single visit, especially if the pulp was damaged rather than infected.Root filled teeth are often weaker than untreated teeth and sometimes require a crown to add extra strength and protection.

Extractions

The removal of a tooth from the mouth. Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, including decay that has destroyed enough tooth structure to
render the tooth un-restorable. Extractions of impacted or problematic wisdom teeth are routinely performed, as are extractions of some permanent teeth to make space for people requiring dental braces.

The thought of having a tooth out is often traumatic for patients, mainly because of stories heard from “other" Rest assured you are in good hands with us, we will help you through the process.
Possible Disadvantages

Extraction of teeth is irreversible and as with all surgery it has risks involved.

Signs of swelling post operative.

Soreness to other areas of the mouth due to opening and stretching.

Possible infection requiring further treatment may result in a dry socket, this may require
more treatment and can last for 7-10 days.

Possible damage to other teeth.

Numbness or altered sensation in the lip, chin, jaw, this is normally temporary but sometimes permanent.

Trismus:- limited jaw opening again usually temporary.

Bleeding. significant bleeding is not common(unless on blood thinners) some oozing can be expected

Sharp edges or splinters may form on the edge of the socket. these may require removal
at a later date/smoothing off.
In complete removal of all roots, to avoid injury to vital area such as the nerves or sinus.

Sometimes bits of roots can be displaced into the upper sinus and require further treatment maybe at hospital

Jaw fracture, while quite rare it is possible, those that do occur or often minor and treatable.

Crowns

A crown is a dental restoration which completely caps or encircles a tooth or is placed on an implant. Crowns are often needed when a large cavity threatens the ongoing health of a tooth. They are cemented onto your tooth. They can be made tooth coloured or gold.

What is the process?
Placing crowns usually completed over two visits to the dentist a week or two apart.

First, we will taken an impression of your teeth. The dentist then shapes any teeth that will bear a crown(s) for this purpose under a local anaesthetic.

Another impression is taken, using the mould, we then custom make your new ceramic crowns and in the meantime give you temporary crowns.

At your next visit, we remove the temporary crowns or bridges and put your new ones firmly in place.

Is this treatment reliable?
Crowns are very durable and can last for many years, however, good oral hygiene and diet is very important to maintain the boney support and structure of the tooth.

Veneers

Veneers are thin tooth coloured materials which bond to the front of your teeth. They can be made of porcelain or ceramic.these are bonded to the front surface of teeth to improve their cosmetic appearance.

Composite filling materials can also be bonded to teeth to create a level appearance orto cover stained/discoloured areas.
(It is similar to placing false nails onto your fingers)

Dentures

Dentures (false teeth) are made of acrylic or cobalt chrome. They can be used to fill a couple of spaces or an entire set of missing teeth. They are a more cost effective way of filling lots of gaps and have come a long way since their birth. They can be kept minimal and people will not even be aware you are wearing them.

Holding dentures in

Dentures are be held in place natural suction to your gums, you may require some form a fixative alongside this. Implants can also be placed for retention

How to I look after my dentures?

Keeping you dentures clean at all times is very important , they should be removed at night to give your gums “a rest" this will keep you gums healthy. We recommended that you brush your dentures and soak them in a glass of cold water whilst you aren't wearing them. You can add special cleaning tablets to the water when you soak your dentures. Rinse and brush them before placing back into your mouth. It maybe that your denture will require specialist cleaning alongside this as they can pick up stain. It is also important to still visit the dentist even if you have dentures, the gums and dentures will still need checking.

How long do dentures last?

Dentures can last for many years, they can, however, break or fail with wear. Most times they can be easily repaired.

How are they made?

They normally takes 3-5 weeks to make. On your first visit, your dentist will assess your needs and thoroughly examine your mouth for suitability for dentures. You may require some extractions or gum treatment before denture work begins. An impression (mould) of your gums and teeth will be taken. This will then be sent to a dental technician and they will make a special tray, custom made to fit your mouth. 2nd visit, A second set of impressions are taken using the special tray, a record of your bite is also taken. 3rd visit, The denture is returned to us in wax, this allows us and you to look and discuss all elements before it is finished, colour, shape of teeth, set up and fit. Following this it will be returned to the technician to finish . A week after you this will return to have the denture(s) fitted

If you should require teeth to be extracted, this needs to be completed and the gums need to to settle and heal before you can begin denture work. If the process is started to soon the gums will continue to change shape and the denture will become loose.

It is possible to make an immediate denture; on the day the teeth are removed the denture is fitted. This would normally be treated as a temporary until such time as the gums heal. It normally takes 3-4 months but can sometimes take slightly longer

Fastbrace(r)

This system was developed about 20 years ago by Dr Anthony Viazis in Dallas. He recognised the need for a treatment that could be completed fast without the risks that come with the older, conventional braces. He developed a system that could straighten teeth differently to the usual conventional braces,  allowing for a fast, safe and affordable solution.

This non extraction technique, is not just about correcting the front teeth, but providing the most comfortable bite when both upper and lower teeth are treated together. It is for both Adults and Children and is the ideal treatment forChildren who may not eligible for NHS orthodontics.Fastbraces®

How Does it work  ?

They not only straighten your teeth but also the roots using low frictional force which encourages the teeth to move quickly, safely and comfortably within 3 months to a about a year depending on the case.
The movement of the teeth is then faster and gives excellent results in a fraction of the time. Most cases are finished in 3-10 months depending on the individuals teeth and alveolar bone structure. This is because of the
technology and the amount wire that this used.

Fastbraces®  is fast, safe, easy and affordable.....WHY?

The System  has been used in the US for over 20 years and heavily based on scientific research relating to  well respected orthodontic literature. There are thousands upon thousands of very happy patients which have benefitted by Fastbraces® treatment. www.fastbraces.com.

The forces used to move teeth are so low and the brackets are on the teeth for shorter period of time, they are less likely to affect the surface of the enamel and trap plaque around the tooth. So less demineralisation and less tooth decay compared to systems that are on for longer. This means the risk of this kind of treatment is viewed lower than other convention treatments.

In turn, the fact that time scale for treatment is reduced leads to lower costs for you the patient. Compared to 2-3 years for other systems.

Fastbraces®  also offers a clear version of the product for a more discreet appearance.

Can Everyone have braces?

The system is suitable for Cosmetic Orthodontics for adults, full orthodontics for children and adults. It is for all types of teeth straightening and after an assessment with us relay your case to our Fastbraces® consultant. Then we will be able to inform you if you are suitable. Children cases may start as soon as they have all of their permanent teeth

The Long term

With the complete alignment of the roots of the teeth, retention is needed only 20 minutes per day for adults. No more retainers during the day for months after treatment. This unique point makes Fastbraces® the ultimate new revolution in teeth straightening and orthodontics in the world. They offer lifetime satisfaction....it's that good!
