My boyfriend took me here last week Thursday for dinner after he had been in the IOD opposite all day at a meeting.'Inspired by Albert Roux' fills you with excitement when you think of what sort of culinary delights you may sample here... then you get let down gently, sadly. It's a lovely big, warm and quite bright hall type restaurant with unusual hen themed artwork and decoration, set in St James Sofitel Hotel. We could hear the pianist next door during our dinner, over the french music they had playing It was 7.45 when we arrived and the place only had 2 other tables of a 3 and 2 to serve, so it lacked any atmosphere and infact felt like you had to whisper While we chose our meal, we were given fresh warm tasty selection of bread with a cube each of pork pateAlthough the food was good, served nicely - it was really quite forgetableMy King prawns for main in a garlic and herb butter were just swamped in the dressing that I could no longer taste the prawns at all, despite texture wise being lovely. Served with a side green salad and some admittedly PERFECT rooster chipsChris had the mini burgers with fois grais for main and they were quite bland and way more over cooked than you would expect, especially for a french restaurant. The wines were good and the staff couldn't of been nicer - in act they were falling over themselves at times that I felt bad they didnt have more people to serve. It was a pleasent evening but I dont think I would be rushing back in a hurry.I think due to location and being connected to the hotel, they felt more need to be overly formal and stuffy in the style of this venue. I can imagine it was huely popular in the 80's with Fat Cats and old Americans.

Brasserie Roux on Pall Mall

One evening we needed somewhere to have an early dinner close to Trafalgar Square, and I happened upon some positive reviews about Brasserie Roux, so we headed there. The restaurant is part of the Sofitel Hotel on Pall Mall, so suffers a little in atmosphere as it is basically a 'hotel restaurant'. The space is decorated quite nicely, and I was amused by the giant 'lampshades' hanging from the ceiling. Service was efficient and helpful (even providing me with a much needed sticky plaster), though at times it felt like we were a part of some sort of function, as the team of wait staff were constantly moving swiftly around the room carrying large trays of identical meals (there was a tour group dining). On arrival we were given two pieces of salami on a small plate, and a basket of bread which was fresh and tasty. To start, Alex had the Ballotine of foie gras with French beans and toasted brioche, which he enjoyed though said it lacked flavour.Main course for me was the Caesar salad with blackened chicken, and Alex has the chef's recommendation of the Venison with poivrade sauce. The venison was perfectly cooked and a decent sized serve. My salad was also good, interestingly presented, and served as requested with the dressing on the side. We shared the Crème brulee au café for dessert - it was nothing special.Drinks are not cheap here, and the food is a little on the expensive side. They do however offer some good value pre-theatre menus which make Brasserie Roux a lot more affordable....shame there is never anything on those set menus that I want to eat!

good West End brasserie

I have become a bit of a regular here. Very close to theatreland, Brasserie Rouxis located in rather a grand hotel (Sofitel).Don't be put off. The place is quite relaxed and there is a good value pre-theatre menu fixe(pre 7.00pm)which , rather irritatingly, they sometimes hide in an attempt for you to order from the main menu. The food is really good (french cuisine)and cooked to a high standard. The wine can be very expensive and it would be nicer to see better value for wines by the glass. The service is utterly charming with the staff trained to a very high standard indeed. Not a place I would go to for a big treat but a perfectly good venue to combine with an evening at a show. It is a bit pricey (this is central London) but certainly not a rip-off.A place you can take people knowing for certain that you will always have good food and friendly service.
