Courses and Training in Mindfulness-Based Pain and Stress Management
Breathworks is a not-for-profit social enterprise and leading international mindfulness organisation co-founded by Vidyamala Burch. The organisation was born out of Vidyamala's personal journey. She first injured her spine at 17 years old and learned to meditate in 1985. In 2001 she started teaching meditation and mindfulness to people living with pain, illness and stress out of a desire to share what she had learned with others. Vidyamala is now an experienced meditation teacher who works internationally. She offers wise and practical guidance in how to bring mindfulness and kindness to experience - including difficulties such as pain and illness - so one can 'live well' with a free and relaxed mind, whatever the circumstances.
Today, Vidyamala is an internationally known author with her book Living Well with Pain and Illness.
Her latest book Mindfulness for Health is co-authored with best-selling writer Danny Penman. Released in 2013, it is destined to become a worldwide phenomenon with its easy to read, light and interesting approach to mindfulness for pain, illness and associated stress.
Our mindfulness courses, teacher training programme and products have been developed to meet the needs of everyone living with chronic pain, physical illness and associated stress. They are designed to ensure that regardless of your situation or condition, you can have access to the Breathworks methods.
We also provide specialist programmes for organisations and for health, education and social care professionals wishing to incorporate mindfulness into their work.
Breathworks programmes and products are a development of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and founded on practice-based research. Our research on the clinical benefits of mindfulness revealed that across all scales measured (mood, pain experience, quality of life and confidence in activity despite pain), the Breathworks approach showed statistically and clinically significant improvement.

A British Medical Association Award Winning practical guide to relieving pain, reducing stress and restoring wellbeing by Vidyamala Burch and Dr Danny Penman.
"I did the Breathworks pain management course which helped me cope with the problems of having an arthritic spine. The skills and insights I learnt really came to the fore when I had a stroke. They helped me deal with the shock and trauma of having a stroke and to adjust to the life changes a stroke brings." FR, 65, Arthritis and stroke
"Vidyamala and her team of well-chosen instructors deeply embody a well understood, insightful and highly developed mindfulness practice tailored to the needs of pain and illness. The beauty and efficacy of her teaching lies in the masterful balance of simplicity, clarity and gentleness combined with perfectly skilful care for the needs of all her participants. The embodiment of this deep authenticity is mindfulness and it is what was shared and absorbed. I have been richly fed by this training and my health and sense of wellbeing has vastly improved. I know that I will continue to be nourished and grow from this training for a very long time." Susan
