About

  • Burleigh Shotokan Karate Club : Be The Best

Traditional Japanese Karate In Newport S. Wales

Burleigh Shotokan Karate Club (Newport, S. Wales) was established in 2004 with the aim of teaching traditional Shotokan karate to the highest standards. To this end the club is affiliated to the Welsh Traditional Karate Federation (WTKF) which has Sensei Masao Kawasoe (8th Dan) as Association Head. We also attend courses with other world class instructors such as Dave Hazard, Wayne Otto OBE, Jon Mottram etc. In addition we integrate concepts from other martial arts such as Kyusho-Jutsu (pressure point striking) as taught by Professor Rick Clark, to ensure that emphasis is placed on realistic self-defence. Club members compete regularly in regional competitions, with many individuals ranked high in league tables.

The club currently has around 70 members ranging from beginner to black belt. Younger children, aged 5 -7 participate in the Tiny Tigers Club whilst older students join the main club. We recognize the existing grade of all new members regardless of previous affiliation or style.

I joined having no idea what to expect. Other clubs I attended were more fitness centres or money making schemes, asking around £2,500 for a black belt course :/ Not on my watch!! Before arriving at my first lesson at the BSKC I was very dubious and expected to be treated like a walking cash point like so many other times, but I really wanted to learn so regardless, I went along! How wrong I was to doubt this most respectful, traditional and very friendly club. Offering excellent instruction in Kihon, Kata and Kumite. (Basics, Formal Exercise and Sparring) I was hooked from the very beginning and made very welcome by everyone at the club. I have never looked back and intend on remaining nothing but loyal to my sensei and fellow students. Give it a bash! You'll love it! www.bskc.com Or search Burleigh Shotokan Karate Club at Fitness for Less, Newport! Oss!

Really Excellent Club

Having looked around a number of martial arts clubs in Newport I finally came across what I'd been looking for, a traditional karate club with a highly experienced instructor. Mark Kupsz is a 3rd Dan black belt with over 35 years experience teaching Shotokan style karate, . On entering the club I was immediately impressed with the facilities, sprung wooden floors, mirrored walls, seperate male and female changing rooms and all manner of training aids. Mark teaches to a high standard as you would expect of somebody who has Master Kawasoe (8th Dan) as his instructor. Master Kawasoe has the reputation of being the most technically proficient instructor in the UK. Mark accepted my current grade and made me feel very welcome. I have now been training with him for 2 years and I am still in awe of his vast knowledge, not only in the area of traditional karate but also competition karate and self defence. He regularly invites guest instructors from other martial arts and encourages members to take part in competitions. The club currently has 60 members and he is happy to take on anyone who has a genuine desire to want to learn. If you would like more details I would recommend visiting his web site www.burleighskc.com (Chris Isaac 1st Dan)
