The Society

The Cambridgeshire Family History Society was founded in 1976 and now has over 1,200 members, in the U.K, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the U.S.A.
It is a Registered Charity and a member of the Federation of Family History Societies.

The Society exists to encourage the study of genealogy, family history and heraldry within the old counties of Cambridgeshire and the Isle of Ely. It provides a point of contact for people world-wide who are interested in surnames and families originating in the area, and also a meeting point for people living in the area whether their ancestors were local or not.

The Aim of our Project Programme

There has been an active programme of project work over the last three decades, which has included the transcription and indexing of parish registers, census returns and monumental inscriptions.

Transcriptions are now complete and available on CDRom for the 1841, 1851, 1861 & 1971 censuses, and transcription of the Anglican Parish Registers for the whole County is also completed. Our continuing project is the transcription of Non-Conformist Registers for the County., plus other records from Cambridgeshire

This work protects the original documents and allows the information to be easily disseminated.

The County Record Office Cambridge and the Cambridgeshire Collection have enormous amounts of information, much of which is inaccessible to the very people most interested in these documents. Reasons for inaccessibility include the lack of study space in the Record Office and Library; documents being uncatalogued or indexed; documents which are far too fragile to be used; and the distance that must be travelled by some of the researchers. Some records are also still held by individual parishes and organisations.
