All Classes have now restarted after the Christmas Break.

Classes have now restarted after the break for Christmas and New Year. Why not try Chinese Martial Arts & Qigong. Qigong dates back over 1800 years, and is a very effective way to improve your health. Regularly practising Dayan Qigong will improve your energy levels, co-ordination, flexibility and stamina. Wing Chun Kung Fu is a very effective martial art, and is an excellent skill to learn for self defence, as well as improving your health. Wing Chun does not rely on being bigger or stronger than your opponent, and with the correct skill a smaller person can defeat a larger stronger person. Chun Yuen Quan originated in the Northern Shaolin temple in Henan Province, China. It has been preserved and handed down through the Beijing Opera, and has retained more of its Martial Arts aspects than modern Wushu. It is extremely good for health, and will leave you feeling light and flexible, whilst improving your posture.Chen Taijiquan (pronounced Tai Chi Chaun)is well known as a health exercise. However Tai Chi was originally created as a very powerful Martial Art. Chen Taijiquan is the original style of Taijiquan and is taught by Master Darryl Moy for self defence and for health. These skills are taught at all levels, and are suitable for adults of any ability. Current students ages range from young adults, through to people in their 60s and 70s. With Classes in Manchester Sheffield Liverpool and Wilmslow there is sure to be a class within reach of you.

First looked at starting Martial Arts a couple of years ago, I now realise how lucky I was to find Sifu Darryl Moy and be able to learn Authentic Ip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu. Have trained in Manchester Sheffield and Liverpool and found the students in all 3 classes to be friendly welcoming and helpful. Would highly recommend this class to anyone looking to take up martial arts, whether it be for self defence or to improve health.

Wing Chun Kung Fu Classes, Manchester.

Wing Chun Kung Fu is a very direct and effective Martial Art. These classes in Manchester City Centre, are taught traditionally. There is no expensive uniforms to buy, no gradings every few months to fork out for, just extremely high quality teaching. There is also a good social side, with class meals each month, and chance to catch up with other class mates after class. If you are looking for a martial art to study, why not try Wing Chun Kung Fu, I attend classes in Manchester City Centre, and they are very easy to get to, just two minutes from the local metrolink station.

I really enjoy studying Wild Goose Qigong, and Chun Yuen Quan Kung Fu with my class mates, practicing together what we have learned. What I value most about my teacher Darryl Moy, is that he appears calm and infinitely patient. Anyone wanting traditional Kung Fu or Qigong classes should definitely come along.

Qigong I happened upon this class when passing through the Friends' Meeting house in Mnachester, and at first assumed it was Tai Chi based on the gentle flowing movements (and what little I knew of Tai Chi!). Of course, now I know better! Qigong is primarily for health, focusing on teaching you to relax, keep a good posture, and maintain a good range of movement for the whole body. In the East I believe it is common for people to generally keep better posture, and only start doing Qigong as they become older. However, in the West, we are generally not as respectful of our bodies, especially in cases where we spend a lot of time at a desk or using a computer! I am told that when he founded our Qigong centre, master Michael Tse used to teach beginners the Wild Goose form, until it became obvious that western people were not used to the movements. Now, one of the appealing things for me about the centre's approach to teaching Qigong is that master Tse has devised several introductory forms designed to introduce the skill and bridge this gap. The Manchester class teacher, Sifu Darryl Moy, has studied Qigong to a high level and understands the theories of Qi flow from which all the movements are derived, which is very useful in explaining why it is correct to perform certain movements in one way and not another. The other invaluable area in which I find he excels is being able to glance at any posture you are holding and tell you where you are going wrong with your weight, strength and intent, then work with you to overcome your misconceptions. I find Qigong an essential prerequisite for all the other skills the centre teaches, as you learn to think about how you move and are encouraged to develop healthy movement habits which carry through into your everyday life. Definitely a class to try! Chen Taijiquan After discovering that what I thought was Tai Chi was actually Qigong, I decided to take a look at the Taijiquan class in order to learn about the differences. Although Qigong teaches you to relax, I found that so many years working at a computer had left me with such tension in my lower back, chest, shoulders and neck that I no longer had any idea what relaxing felt like, or even when I was doing it! This, for me, is where the Chen style Taijiquan classes really made a difference. The style focuses on strength in the legs, with the upper body free, soft and relaxed. Standing meditation exercises and the beginning forms make it really clear where you are tense and blocked, and more importantly, help you to recognise what the blockages feel like so that you can begin to let go. From there I have started to learn about the martial art applications of the style, and the principle of moving in circles and spirals, and am completely hooked. Chen Taijiquan is currently my favourite skill of those taught by the centre, and is certainly one of the most challenging! I also think that for me, facing this challenge would not have been possible without the attention and depth of knowledge of the class Sifu, Darryl Moy. Some of the concepts and ideas were (and remain!) difficult for me to grasp, but Sifu always finds so many different ways to demonstrate and explain them until we find one that penetrates. Of course, working through these problems until you feel your movements become more correct is all part of the reward! Chun Yuen Quan I had never heard of Chun Yuen Quan before I started taking some of the other classes offered by the centre, but I was curious so I thought I would take a look. For something that I started out of casual curiosity, this style rapidly became my favourite for a long time! Because the style leads into Northern Shaolin weapons forms, there is an immediate emphasis on strict posture and energy of movement which I had not come across before. The practice routines which we work through are so energetic and intense that they look as though they should be exhausting, and yet instead after performing them you feel a fantastic a sense of exhilaration and well-being. Chun Yuen is also the style which continues to contribute most to rapid improvements in my suppleness, flexibility and balance. Watching Sifu Darryl Moy perform the Chun Yuen forms is an amazing sight, quite an experience, showing just how deep this skill goes. I can not only see how much more I have to learn, but also how much more he has yet to pass on! I remain thoroughly addicted to Chun Yuen, and if I don't get in my regular practice for any reason, I really miss the energy boost and am very aware of how sluggish I become. Although it is not a style many people will have heard of, I recommend trying it out -- once you start to feel the benefit, you won't want to go back! Wing Chun I had heard of friends studying Wing Chun and proclaiming it one of the most effective martial art styles before I joined the centre, but I really knew very little about it beyond that. Even when I decided to start studying it with Sifu Darryl Moy, I had no idea about the lineage of the style and our classes. Now, I understand that almost all taught Wing Chun today comes from Grandmaster Ip Man's decision to open the style for teaching to the public after the war. Ip Man's son, Ip Chun, is my teacher's teacher's teacher, or Tai Sigong as we say in class. This lineage is very important and Sifu follows Ip Tai Sigong's teachings very closely when passing on the skill. At first I found Wing Chun very unfamiliar and a little difficult to learn, as performing movements as correctly and accurately as possible is a critical point of the style and there are so many points to remember before you are ready to join in with Chi Sau. Chi Sau is the exercise which is used instead of sparring in order to practise your skill and applications of the martial art. However, whilst sparring can be quite confrontational and sometimes lead to bad feeling, Chi Sau is actually quite a friendly activity, and everybody in the class helps each other to improve their level. Of course, the other thing which helps improve your level is the class teacher. His knowledge of Wing Chun is truly encyclopaedic and his understanding of how posture, forms and applications are linked brings the skill to life. He knows that this could very well be a skill you will depend on one day in a confrontational situation and pays personal attention to making your form and Chi Sau as correct and accurate as possible. If you are within range of Manchester, Sheffield or Liverpool and want to be serious about learning Wing Chun properly, this is the class you should be signing up for, no questions asked.
