Sports Therapy

The treatment of sports-related problems has grown over recent years due to the vast increase in leisure activities and the interest in sport and fitness. The TeamGB success at the London 2012 Olympics has encouraged many more people to get involved in sport which has lead to an increase, not only in sports injury treatments, but also in the use of sports therapy to avoid them.

Postural Assessments:identifies any imbalances that may be causing (or likely to cause) musculo-skeletal problems. Using a variety of unique bodywork techniques combined with stretching and strengthening exercises, we can assist in improving your posture. Postural improvements can help with sporting performance and general health and wellbeing.
Injury Treatments and Rehabilitation: once we have identified your problem, we will treat it with a combination of Electrotherapy equipment, such as Ultrasound and Interferential, and Manual Therapy.
Sports Massage: this is used to help to keep muscles supple and toned. It helps to keep joints mobile and helps to improve sporting performance and flexibility. Pre-event sports massage can help to reduce the risk of injury from sprains, strains and muscle tears.
Remedial Massage: sometimes wrongly classed as 'deep tissue massage', our remedial massage techniques are used to help alleviate muscular problems, and can assist with reduction of pain, increase range of movement in joints, and rid the muscles of scar tissue. Whiplash, repetitive strain injury and back pain are some of the problems successfully treated.
Exercise Therapy: is used post injury for rehabilitation, to help improve performance and ensure your speedy return back to sport, exercise or activity. Once we have identified your problem, we will treat it with a combination of Electrotherapy equipment, such as Ultrasound and Interferential, and Manual Therapy.
Sports Therapy has also become widely used in the corporate world, as a way for companies to assess and treat many work related problems, such as back pain and what is commonly known as 'repetitive strain injury'.

The benefits of the above treatments are amazing. We have seen fantastic results treating people with the following problems:

Muscular aches and pains
Migraines
Anxiety
Depression
Digestive disorders
Bad circulation
Headaches
Build up of bad toxins and impurities
Deficit of natural feel good and pain-killing chemicals

Myofascial Release

A relatively new therapy to the UK, Myofascial Release has, over the past few decades, proven to be the most effective form of manual therapy treatment. It is an extraordinary technique that has extraordinary benefits; improvements can be made to all of the following conditions:

General Well-Being
Pain Relief
Injuries (chronic and acute)
Sleeping Patterns
Emotional Health
Allergies
The Immune System
Digestive System
Circulation
Where Physiotherapy and regular Massage focus specifically on muscles and Osteopathy and Chiropractic on the skeletal system, Myofascial Release focuses on the release of the body's most flexible yet sturdy tissue; the fascia. This type of connective tissue surrounds each and every muscle and organ in the body. Its continuity and endlessness means that the effect of its restriction can cause imbalance in the joints of the body which, in turn, causes an imbalance on posture. This compromises the body's ability to function at its optimum efficeincy and strength.

To get the most out of Myofascial Release, we firstly focus on assessing your posture. There is a blue print of the body whereby balance is key. With this in mind, we work to re-establish balance by focusing on releasing key areas of fascia that could be holding the body in imbalanced positions. Myofascial Release lengthens and restores the building blocks position and creates the balance that the body requires.
City Therapy practice partner Christian appeared on the Channel M Breakfast show in 2009 to demonstrate the effects of Myofascial Release. Click here to view his appearance and to understand more about how our team can help you with this incredible technique and process.

Physiotherapy

Our Physiotherapist is Chartered and registered with the Health Professions Council. We are recognised by all the major Health Care Cash Back schemes such as Healthshield, HSA and Hospital Saturday Fund, to name but a few.

If you have been involved in an accident, we can arrange treatments for you and liaise directly with your solicitor with regards to your case and injuries. In most cases, all of your treatment fees can be reclaimed from third party insurers.

Post-operative rehabilitation:

Physiotherapy is an essential aid to recover strength and movement following surgeries such as:
Ligament Reconstruction
Tendon Repairs
Meniscectomy (Removal of Knee Cartilages)
Setting of Fractures
Removal of Spinal Disks
Joint Replacements

We can help patients return to full fitness by recommending a carefully worked-out exercise programme tailored to the individual and specific injury.

Spinal conditions: In particular, spinal conditions need to be treated promptly if long term disability and prolonged treatment are to be prevented.
Postural lower back pain: This can be the start of more significant back problems such as disc problems. Long hours at a computer with poor sitting posture can contribute to lower back pain.
Depending on diagnosis, treatment may be administered through a combination of:

Mobilisation and Manipulation Techniques
Electrotherapy
Exercise
Postural Advice
Core Stability Exercises
Please contact us to make an appointment. Our Physiotherapist is available Tuesday & Thursday evening only.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile plant materials known as essential oils to improve mind and body health by assisting the body's natural ability to heal and balance itself.

There are several ways of using essential oils. Massage is one of the best because not only do you receive the therapeutic properties of the essential oils but you also get the benefits of the massage itself. Since ancient times, massage was one of the primary methods of healing and relieving pain.

When applied to the body, essential oils penetrate the skin by the hair follicles and sweat glands and are absorbed into the body stream. Each essential oil has its own characteristics and aroma. Many essential oils help to kill bacteria and stimulate and strengthen the body's immune system preventing infection. Some others increase the blood and lymph circulation and help with the elimination of toxins while others promote new cell regeneration and stimulate the body's ability to heal itself.

Aromatherapy massage stimulates the organs of the body including the skin, muscles and nerves. Thus, it can be beneficial for skin conditions such as acne or eczema and also for tight muscles or painful joints (e.g. arthritis).

It can be also have an invaluable effect on the nervous system. It is very useful in conditions such as depression, stress, insomnia or tension. It helps the body to relax and also to achieve a better state of mind. The aroma of the essential oils sends a signal directly to the Limbic System in the brain which is the centre of the emotional faculties and memory, having a powerful effect on mood and your general state of mind.

Medical Acupuncture

Medical Acupuncture involves inserting fine needles into key blocks of the body to bring about relief from pain. Nerve pathways can be reinstated and muscle spasms can soften; such a big response to the micro trauma created by the finest of needles. Medical acupuncture is an adaptation of the Chinese method, only using modern, up-to-date knowledge of the muscular system and understanding of Myofascial trigger points.

Most clients prefer this technique to manipulative therapy, so don't be put off by the idea of needles. Of course there can be mild discomfort, but mostly, it is the idea of the therapy that is worse than its actual application. Like we always say ‘if a needle is too uncomfortable, we will take it out'.

We mainly use medical acupuncture alongside our sports therapy/remedial therapy treatments. It is a brilliant aid to speed up recovery from an injury or easing pain. For those interested in discovering our unique approach to this therapy, please contact us to book an appointment.
