The Crown is part of the Adnams estate that dominates this delightful coastal town. In fact it's virtually impossible to find a pub or hotel that is not owned by them but that for once is not necessarily a bad thing as they tend to do things far better than most. Both hotels are first rate, the other - The Swan, being a wonderful throwback to the days of first rate good old fashioned service with deep sofa's in the lounge and crisp tablecloths at Breakfast. There is even the visitors book from 1940 with Winston Churchill's signature bold a brass. The Crown has a cosy, vibrant brasserie that delivers in all areas. You get a friendly welcome when you arrive, courteous and prompt service at the table and food that is rich in bold flavours and refined combinations.Fish features strongly on the menu and is cooked with a light touch and the emphasis is on simplicity. The grilled sardines were hugely satisfying and the shin of beef for a main was accompanied with an deep red wine jus that lingered long on the palate. There is a good wine menu that reflects Adnams intelligent buying strategy and of course there is the award winning stable of 6 beers and lagers that are brewed just 100 yards away. There's not much to do after dark in Southwold so a few hours in the company of Adnams is a very easy choice to make and well worth the effort !!
