Music Online Innovation Evolution and Good ol' Fashioned Fun.

The internet is a wonderful creation: from keeping up with friends on Facebook, to watching comedy clips on Youtube, it’s easy to stay entertained. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find some very interesting concepts evolving in the world of online music. It seems there are a lot of innovative minds at work on the web – here’s just a few of their bold ideas… Soundation www.soundation.com Soundation says it ‘gives everyone the opportunity to make music on the internet’. The key phrase being ‘on the internet’: a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) built in to the web browser really does allow you to create musical tracks from scratch, without the need for expensive software on your computer. The concept is simple: pick and choose loops from Soundation’s built in library. There are four tracks in which music can be placed, which allows for four different loops playing at any one time. On top of a whole bundle of free loops, premium users get access to an array of extra material, as well as being able to save projects and import their own sounds. Overall, this is a brilliant idea, and well worth a visit to the web site. Just be aware that you’ll still need to pay to get the most out of this product. thesixtyone www.thesixtyone.com Are you ready to go on a musical journey? Thesixtyone performs more like a radio than a website. But this is no Radio 1: do not expect to hear any talking between tracks. Expect neither to hear anything you have heard previously, as the site offers up and coming, exciting new artists. Upon arrival at thesixtyone, music begins playing almost instantly. Accompanying each song is a full-screen picture of the artist, along with text bubbles which display facts about them. Thesixtyone says about their website ‘new artists make music and listeners decide what’s good’. By using a ‘heart’ system, users can display their appreciation for a certain artist, helping them to gain more exposure. The site also claims to be ‘nurturing a growing ecosystem where talented folks can sell songs and merchandise directly to their fans’. This is a great step forward for the people that make the music industry exciting: the musicians. JamLegend www.jamlegend.com OK, this one is a silly one. But then where would we be without a little light entertainment from time to time? In all seriousness, Guitar Hero style games such as this one are very good for improving rhythm and co-ordination. And although they have little in common with actually playing the guitar, this alone redeems JamLegend. So, if you have five minutes to spare, go to JamLegend, play a game and improve your musical knowledge, rhythm and co-ordination in the process! Musicovery www.musicovery.com Musicovery’s goal is to ‘fine-tune the mood of the music you want’. It’s unique ‘mood pad’ lets you roll the mouse over different mood areas to change the music to match your mood. Registered users can click an area on the pad to be shown a playlist of songs to match how they are feeling. This is worth a visit, even if just for the amusement of rolling over different areas of the mood pad to create rather stark contrasts between the resulting audio. Karaoke Party www.karaokeparty.com We’ve seen karaoke games many times before, from the classic ‘Singstar’ right up to the new generation ‘Lips’ for the Xbox 360. What I like about ‘Karaoke Party’, an online version of said games, is its exclusive online presence. No need to buy an expensive console – let alone the game to go with it – just get online and get singing! From an educational point of view, I really like the main phrase on their home page: ‘helping you stay in tune’. These guys know that, where other instrument emulating games fall down, singing games can live on. Not only are they fun, but they offer a real chance to get good at a musical craft. And Karaoke Party bridges the gap even more – improve your singing voice from the comfort of your home, with nothing but an internet connection and a computer.

Take It Away scheme

Are you desperate to learn an instrument but don’t have the money to get started? The new Take It Away Scheme can help. Take It Away is an Arts Council England initiative, designed to help you realise your musical dreams. The scheme gives successful applicants £2000 interest free credit on any musical instrument. 10% of the instrument’s value must be paid up front. The remaining credit can be paid back in nine monthly instalments. As well as providing instruments, the credit counts towards a whole array of amplifiers, accessories and educational materials to help you get started. See ourbuyers guide to find out what you need to begin playing an instrument. Beware; the scheme does not include microphones, pa systems or recording equipment in its selection of valid purchases. A list of eligible items can be found here. This is a brilliant scheme, taking the financial strain away from those who actively want to learn this valuable skill. You can apply in any participating store – see http://www.takeitaway.org.uk/stores/ for a store list. Applicants must be 18 or over, permanent UK residents and hold a bank account capable of handling direct debit payments. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian can apply for you. For more information on the Take It Away scheme, visit www.takeitaway.org.uk or www.myspace.com/takeitawayscheme.
