The HSE has developed a new standard test to validate lift truck operator training which has the following three tests:
1. A theoretical test 80% correct to pass.
2. A pre-use check The examiner will assess the trainee / operator to see if
they meet the required standard to pass .
3. A practical test A maximum of 40 points may be lost.
To gain certification the trainee / operator must successfully pass all the three tests.
These notes are to give employers an insight of the knowledge and operating skills required for new trainees, existing operators and operators who attend refresher training to pass the three tests.
All trainees/operators who attend a training course are issued an A5 version of this manual. For certificated operators attending a refresher course the A5 manual is sent to the company prior to the course commencement date to allow the operators to prepare for the tests.
Due to a wide range of applications involved, no liability can be accepted for any errors or omissions in these notes. Not all parts of these notes will apply to, or necessarily be correct for all the applications lift trucks could be required for.
The notes should be read in conjunction with the manufacturers instructions for the lift truck used, Company Safety Policies, Company Risk Assessments, the various guidance notes and Codes of Practice issued by the Health and Safety Executive and the relevant Legislations.
