Ecological design, permaculture consultancy

All aspects of garden/landscape design and implementation by ecologist and environmental designer, Nicholas Marcroft

Ecological design is a means of integrating your home and garden with the natural ecosystem that surrounds it. No matter where we live, no matter the size of the property we may have, whether it is commercial, public or domestic, it is possible to best serve nature and turn the space we occupy into an environment that not only helps native flora and fauna, but actively encourages as diverse an assemblage as possible.

Our very presence, as individuals, communities, populations, creates what is known as an 'ecological footprint'. The more we take rather than give back to nature, the deeper the footprint, the greater the detrimental effect we have on our environment. We can however, as individuals redress this imbalance by the way we choose to design and maintain our home and garden.

From a human perspective, ecological design is also about concious, efficient design. It is about working with, not against nature, and how to best use ecological principles in realising landscape designs that not only serve functional needs, whatever they may be, but reflect concious thought in the way we choose to represent our relationship with and respect for nature.

With an MSc in Ecology as well as the Permaculture Association of Britain's Permaculture Design Certificate, the design process from initial survey to implementation is based upon ethics and principles that not only serve to transform a landscape but seek to engage the customer on both an intellectual and emotional level.

Whatever practical use or aesthetic quality a customer wishes their landscape to entail, design principles based on ecology and permaculture provide a means of not only augmenting the local ecosystem but offer logical environmental solutions. Please see my website for further details.

"congratulations on your beautiful front garden. I love driving past it. This may not mean anything to you but it feels energetically light and uplifting even just driving past it. Thankyou for bringing it to our community."

Testimonials

We have been using Nick from Eco Design since late 2008, and as a result our garden has improved significantly. Our fruit trees are now in healthy shape and delivering much better yields. We appreciate Nicks horticultural knowledge, attention to detail and suggested improvements to our mature garden. Using Eco Design has been a worthwhile investment.

Nicholas designed and implemented a concentric circular 'key hole' raised bed vegetable garden for us, surrounded by a step over rabbit proof fence and box hedge. We now get impressive organically grown crops for most of the year, pesticide free thanks to the intercropping and companion planting that nicholas showed us. Not only are we happy with the results but is has provided our two sons with an added interest in growing some of our own food - an important lesson for anyone!
