I passionately believe that people who dedicate a substantial amount of their life to serving their country and showing selfless commitment to protecting and improving opportunities for others, have a tremendous amount to offer civilian employers when they return home. They are different; their core values of loyalty, integrity, adaptability and personal self discipline set them apart. They only think in TEAM.

Since returning to the civilian community and workplace, I have noticed that what makes our ex service men and women so special is their ability to put the needs of their employer before themselves. Loyalty is a virtue that runs through the veins of every soldier, sailor or airman. It is not just about doing what the boss tells you to do, it is much more. It's about understanding their needs, accepting and embracing the challenges they face and sharing them as if they were your own. It is also about understanding that nobody is perfect and accepting the faults of others and compensating for them with genuine commitment, tolerance and flexibility. Loyalty comes from within and cannot be bought or bullied out of someone. When you commit to serve your country you make a selfless commitment to put something before yourself.

Discipline is instilled in our service personnel from the very moment they join the military, because discipline is the fabric of the society they live in. The greatest thing about self- discipline is: once you have worked hard to learn it, like riding a bike, it is with you for life. Discipline is required to learn new skills. To be the most effective military organisation in the world you need to train harder than you fight. This means stretching your endurance threshold and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, then having the discipline and courage to stay out there when the going gets tough. As every top-performing athlete will tell you, once you push yourself beyond a threshold of pain, sacrifice and endurance, it no longer becomes a barrier. Going the extra mile and being able to trust that the delegated job will be done, is standard when you employ an ex service person.

The UK military is renowned for it's ability to go anywhere and do anything. The ability to fight and survive in the desert, jungle and subzero arctic conditions are obvious, as is the ability to adapt to differing enemies, from organised armies to terrorists. But what about their ability to deal with scenarios at extremely short notice, such as mad cow's disease, firemen, ambulance and prison officer strikes? How they help to prevent and clear up after national disasters like flooding or earthquakes. Adaptability is about being able to change the way you think and behave to match the situation you are in. As an employer you want your relationship with your employees to be built on trust, not risk management. Integrity is about understanding what is right and what is wrong. It is also about having the courage to stand by those values even when the going gets hard. To serve and be successful in the British military you must have high levels of integrity, your word is your bond. A service man or woman will treat your customers, fellow staff, your premises and equipment as if it was their own.
