About

Counselling and Psychotherapy for Adults and Young People in Hull

Hi I'm Helen Sanders a qualified and experienced counsellor working in thoughtful and creative ways, with extensive experience working with adults and young people aged 14 and above.

I'm a person just like you. I have been in therapy and I really believe therapy works because it worked for me. It was from that life changing experience and relationship that I had with my therapist that I decided I wanted to train as a therapist too.

I chose to train in Transactional Analysis because it had aided me in radically changing my life and as a client myself I loved the theory. I went from adapting who I am to fit in with others wants and needs to be able to be my real self and proud of who I am.

I have ten years' experience working in the voluntary sector with young people and adults from diverse backgrounds all over the city of Hull and have extensive experience working in respectful, empowering and client centred ways.

I believe counselling and psychotherapy are helpful in building your self awareness, uncovering more about how you relate to others and the world around you as well as supporting you in learning how to express yourself more fully.

I am committed to providing counselling and psychotherapy in a safe, confidential and non-judgmental environment using a model known as Transactional Analysis.

Transactional analysis has three core values:

1) I'm ok you're ok! - The therapist and the client are of equal value in the relationship and are both responsible for the work.

2) People can think for themselves - you can take responsibility and be independent from outside influences.

3) You can change if you want to - you do not have to revisit the same harmful patterns of behaviour again and again and instead investigate new positive ways of being.

Whilst being mindful of these three assumptions we will work together to agree on what you want from the therapy and how we will work towards those goals in a safe, respectful and non-judgemental environment.

When we meet its important for me to know what you want from coming to therapy (some people don't know why and this is ok but it's important that this is verbalised and we can agree of a way of working with this).

We will explore why you have come, what you want out of it and what is the cause of you unease. From here we will establish a way of working together which will aid you getting what you ultimately want from therapy as well as considering how you might stop yourself from getting it.

Coming to therapy can help you to:

Identify harmful patterns of behaviour you're in and explore ways of being different
Re-connect with your feelings
Re-discover your spontaneity
Explore your close relationships and improve your interactions
Have a safe space to work through and experience difficult feelings with a trained professional
Share thoughts you have never verbalised
Connect with another person and be seen for who you really are
Put down the heavy burdens you have been carrying
Make connections with past experiences which are impacting on the present and work through them in safe surroundings.

A comfortable and safe working environment is provided in the east and west of Hull where your confidentiality is assured.

My fee is £35 during the day and £40 on an evening and when working for EAP providers.
