Dear Peter, As you are aware the AAIR Charity supports asthma and allergy research based here at Southampton General Hospital. Two years ago we went through a very difficult time and making all staff redundant and not having awarded a grant for a while, things looked bleak. Working with Gabriel Design, re-designing our website and now operating on a volunteer only support model, we have transformed our fortunes. At the next Trustees meeting on 30th June we will award a 4 year PhD studentship for a medical student that is worth £90,000. The University of Southampton are so delighted they are prepared to offer matching funds. In addition we will be awarding maybe 4 pump priming grants of up to £10,000 each that will allow us to generate grants and data that we can submit to larger organisations for full grant support. This will cost £40,000. Grant applications are now judged and scored by 4 experts who form a scientific committee and make recommendations to the Trustees based on their experience and funds available. We are being a little conservative with what we offer by way of grants because we were stung by our experiences of two and a half years ago. However, the help and advice from Gabriel Design has proved absolutely invaluable. We had had nothing but favourable comments about our website and I am convinced it is the catalyst that transformed the charity into one that has a secure and bright future.
