good food, a bit pricey, but layed back and unpretencious staff and ambiance. I'd say gastro is best enjoyed when you have time to soak in the atmosphere and relax over a few courses. Last time i was there (on a Sunday evening) we were the last to leave, the french staff letting us stay late and just cleaning up around us.

This used to be one of my favourite local restaurants but we shall not be back. Steak and chips arrived 5 minutes after we ordered - freshly cooked!?!Pepper sauce was runny and tasteless and when we asked to change it to bearnaise we were given dry crusted sauce that we were afraid to eat.Tarte tatin came with cheap ice cream, squirty cream and chocolate sauce from a bottle.Staff couldn't care less and we had to have an argument for a discount on our bill. And this came with a bill of £50 for food and half a bottle of wine! Deeply disappointing.

Bad Attitude - Light my Candles Please

Hi AllWell if you are planning a birthday party here, then dont. I asked them to light some candles and they wanted to charge me. When i said come on, they wanted a fight. As for the food - the food came far too quickly, must have good microwaves in the kithen. Very poor quality food in my opinion, my chicken came in a watery sauce, my friends had a very poor risotto.Wine was expensive and and quite poor quality. So all in all not a good experience, and would not recommend this place to any friends.I enjoy good food and could have cooked a better meal myself.Big thumbs down.

A little hole in the wall, but...

...the food is actually really good, and the presentation would be at home in a posh restaurant. There are six outside tables and Venn is a fairly quiet side street, so a good place to enjoy lunch on a sunny day or supper on a pleasant evening. Tables inside are limited, but the environment is cozy. They specialize in seafood and the Salmon filet is great.

We came as a group of 10 people and overall everyone was really satisfied with their respective meals. While the restaurant is crowded in the typical French style, we had the benefit of a very large, rustic picnic table in the back and had lots of room to move around. The service was good and I was surprised since I had read a number of reviews where people had been dissatisfied, but we were really quite pleased - and it is difficult to serve a group of 10 people!Nothing absolutely fabulous or divine, but definitely an enjoyable meal of good quality and a kitschy atmosphere - if I lived in Clapham, I would go back. I really enjoyed the meal there and we left quite happy.Mains range between 11 and 20 pounds and run the gamut of typical French brasserie fare; moules frites, entrecote, soupe a l'oignon... you know what I mean. Slightly novel (to me, anyway), their dessert options (mousse, creme brulee, etc) on the menu can be chosen in 2 options; either the dessert itself, for about 4,75, or the dessert and a small serving of dessert wine, at 6,75. A great idea for anyone who wants to try the wine they've paired with the dessert but don't want a full serving.

Gastro is ideally located 2 mints walk from Clapham Common tube station and right opposite Clapham picture house. What I love most about it aside from its great-tasting and authentic French food, is its atmosphere. All the staff are French and greet you with a loud and friendly "bonjour!" as you enter the place. So if you want to brush up your French skills this is the place to do it in. The service is friendly and attentive, and the male waiters unforgettably flirtatious (you go girls, and boyfriends beware as you're not necessarily gonna stop them! ;o)Prices can be quite hefty with a bottle of wine included. The place caters for comfy candle-lit dinners or cosy Sunday brunches (my favourite space is the big wooden table in the middle of the restaurant laden with newspapers at lunchtime). And to top it off, one of the things that most restaurants forget to do these days but not Gastro, is to bring you a basket of fresh bread and butter as soon as you sit down, without you having to ask for it. One of the sure signs that they take their food seriously over there (but you sure do pay the price..)
