George Payne has been a traditional family butcher for over 40 years, establishing his own shop in Brunton Park, Gosforth, in 1987. The business celebrated its landmark 25th anniversary in 2012.
The shop is renowned near and far for sourcing locally fed and reared meat products - notably rare breeds beef, lamb and pork - through long-established gate-to-plate partnerships with Northumberland farmers.
George Payne remains one of celebrity chef Rick Stein's 'Food Heroes' and is a founder member of the national Butchers Q Guild, which represents many of the UK's leading independent meat retailers.
The Smithfield AwardsQ Guild members are officially recognised as being among the best butchers in the UK. As such, they have to meet stringent health and hygiene standards, with regular inspections carried out by independent inspectors.
George Payne is a Northumbria Butcher of the Year winner and the shop has clinched many local, regional, national and international awards for its products over the years in meat industry competitions.
George and his team are fully committed to promoting provenance at every opportunity, recognising that customers have a right to know exactly how the meat they eat is produced.
The team is more than happy to provide them with this vital information, as well as freely offering product help, advice, recipe ideas and cooking tips.
One of the shop's keynote aims is to educate adults, children and young people the values of eating healthy, sustainable, locally produced food.
Little wonder then that George Payne Butchers has developed both a name and a reputation that ranks among the best in the business - a shining example of best practice the UK butchery sector.
