Garden Maintenance

Any gardener will tell you that behind every beautiful garden is a lot of hard work and toil carried out by skilled people with a real passion for caring for nature. As much as we all want our garden to be admired by our visitors, sometimes we are too busy, find certain tasks too difficult, or need that extra bit of flair and expertise from a professional. That is where Great Garden comes in. Be it weeding, pruning, lawn mowing or hedge trimming we offer professional gardening services across South Oxfordshire and West Berkshire including Didcot, Henley on Thames, Wallingford and Abingdon.

Weeding
Not a favourite job for most people and yet a nicely weeded garden looks soooo good! If you have better use for your time or just plainly don't want to do it, let us do the dirty work and crawl on all fours with weeding fork in hand. Sometimes we have found the use of biodegradable herbicide can be the time and money saving answer! We know what is weed and what's not, when and how best to attack it. Ask us!

Lawn Mowing
As much as we love our lawns the task of mowing the grass can be repetitive and tedious. It tends to get put off and presents a greater mountain to climb the next time! How would you like this work done by a professional at great rates? Ask us! But we all know a truly good looking lawn needs much more than cutting – it needs weeding, scarification, aeration and feeding. Read more here

Pruning &renovations
Most shrubs and trees will benefit from pruning and sometimes it will certainly stop your garden running wild. We are experts in taming gardens! This is quite a skilled job as some plants perform well when cut while others die if attacked with a crude pair of loppers :( Talk to us

Planting
No plant will live forever, and every garden develops “holes" or areas where one particular invasive specimen is trying to take over the world. It is only when it is brought to book that it will leave space for new plants. We can suggest, or supply and plant those shrubs which would benefit from a particular location and will compliment or contrast with existing planting.

Hedge trimming
A job that most people do not consider to be their favourite. Sometimes garden owners are not able to do it because of reach issues or using ladders. On the other hand a nicely cared for hedge can be a thing of beauty. If you are after hedge-perfection without the back ache we are here for you ;) No matter what height, length or plant specie we will make it eye-pleasing once again.

Clearances
On occasions it is better to start from scratch. Get rid of most of the garden materials which have accumulated over the years and allow the garden to be reborn. Often it can even be the cheaper option. On the other hand it is good to know what to salvage as it would be a shame to throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Lawn care

The lawn is the carpet of your garden. It's no wonder then that even neglected gardens with properly cared for lawns have a wild and exciting charm. Do you live in Oxfordshire or West Berkshire? We offer gardening services to areas such as Henley on Thames, Didcot, Cholsey, Abingdon and Wallingford. Let Great Garden help you bring the best out of your lawn:

Mowing
A nicely striped lawn which is correctly cut can offer great beauty. At Great Garden we have become experts in what to some seems just a repetitive and boring task. How often or how low the lawn should be cut depends on the weather, condition and composition of the turf. We can get you the best possible results with the minimum of ease at competitive prices. Just let us know what your dream lawn should look like and we'll do the rest!

Feeding
You are what you eat – applies to all living things – lawns included! We can offer many options as to how to feed your lawn and if you would like tailor made nutrition for your turf – just ask.

Moss killing
This can be done at any time of year, but late autumn and early spring are the best times – just before moss starts producing spores. Another advantage is that the moss-killer produces dark green, healthy lawn which in cool winter months looks rather nice. A week or two after moss treatment scarifying should take place.

Scarification
This is what we call the “combing" of the lawn at Great Garden. It removes dead moss, accumulated thatch and gives the grass plants a bit more space to breathe and grow. After lawn mowing, this is the second best thing that you can do to your favourite piece of green.

Hollow tine aeration
Ask any plant – compacted soil is just not a good place to grow. Aeration relieves compaction by making holes in the soil so that roots have access to water, nutrients and air. We use specially adapted machines which cuts out tiny plugs up to 6 inch deep which will stay open for longer.

Hedges, trees & topiary

Trimming hedges
From small to tall we can trim them all! And what is more, we do it at the right time of year and keep them at the same height. Some will need to grow, while others will need clipping back so their overall health is not affected. Just tell us what you would like your hedge to do for you and we'll whip it in to obedience!

Planting hedges
A beautiful and natural alternative to a fence or a screen, the right hedge will change and bloom throughout the seasons. It can be planted all year round though the cooler months of late autumn till early spring will offer better conditions and price advantage of bare-root plants.

Trees
Here at greatgarden.co.uk we love trees! Some trees have become our best friends! Small or huge, young or centuries old, they all need some maintenance from time to time. Be it pruning, crown reductions or felling.

Tree pruning
From dwarf apple to large oak. We have the equipment and knowledge when and how to do it. Ask us!

Tree felling
In confined spaces between and above houses and lines, or in open field we can bring it down safely and cut it to right sized logs for you or dispose of it. Timber!

Stump grinding
If you don't want to wait the next 20 years for a stump to decompose, or you need the spot for something else – a Great Garden stump grinder is the answer. Just say the word.

Topiary
The art of the shears. The tightly trimmed geometrical shapes or flowing curves are just perfect to offset the wild shape of other planting. You can learn to trim topiary only one way: trim, trim, trim and do some more trimming then repeat. I know because we have done loads of it so if you want to be sure that your 100 year old topiary is in good hands please get in touch – maybe just from the respect to the mastery of those who shaped it a century ago.
