must try harder!
I recently visited 19/08/09 the highwayman as a party of four and was quite optimistic as I walked through the doors,mood lighting and good background music created a nice welcome.The decor was nice but the layout of the chairs etc was still the same as before the refurb.I ordered the drinks and was bewildered by the ignorance of the young bar staff (i'm only in my 30's too by the way).There was no carvery offered this evening so ordered from the 2 for 1 menu.Service was very slow considering there was less than 15 customers eating,portions were minute and my indian meal extra's were burnt.I only live 5 minutes walk away and really hoped that the recent facelift would have transformed the place,as it always looks inviting at night from the roadside,but it gets thumbs down from me.Maybe if the owners paid better wages to attract top chefs/friendlier staff then people would perhaps pay more for their meals.It also needs to decide on a theme for the decor,it currently has a cheap wine bar look but would perhaps suit a cosy country kitchen style instead. Take a leaf from the Hare and tortoise pub nr Rossington where there is never an empty table....hope this review helps,cheers.

change for the better?
i think the highway man (or broad for those local people) needed a change, a new chef and some staff training would o bin a good start. the new look is good but think they made a big mistake getting rid of the kids area as its no longer somewhere t go wi the kids t take them out for tea, especially for local people.This then makes it less of a family pub/restaurant. i also think the 2 for one menu before hand was good and think it was a mistake to get rid of this. while the cost of food has gone up the drinks have stayed the same which arent cheap either.this then makes it a dear occasion. I have been and tried the carvery but do not rate it. the last time i went on an evening all the veg had been sat there a while and some kind of food in a serving dish was covered in gravy which had gone dry and cracked and didnt look too good. i dont think the veg is being checked regularly and changed which leads me to believe they same kitchen staff work there and have had not extra training.I think the competion locally is good which makes it less worth visitin. if i wanted pub grub id recommend going to The mill just up the road in scawsby. and if i wanted a really nice carvery there is pick burn arms towards brodsworth. therefor i no longer visit this pub/restaurant as i can recieve better quality food, better service and pay less at other local pub/restaurants.This is a real shame as i live within walking distance and would definatly go regularly if the food was better drinks were cheaper and the service was better.

The Highwayman
If you haven't been to The Highwayman since it underwent MAJOR refurbishment and change of management in Feb, you are in for a shock! It is unrecognisable to what it was previously!It now operates as a carvery (with other options) and is viewed as a restaurant that sells drinks as opposed to a pub that serves food. The decor is stunning, quite sophisticated looking.The prices are a little high, but they now offer a 2 for 1 on carvery, perhaps in an attempt to remedy that.The place wasn't particularly family friendly when we went, but there is a play area outside.The food was good, service friendly and well worth a look considering the transformation it has undergone!
