A beautiful Victorian mansion house, set in stunning grounds in the peaceful Stewartry countryside, is home to Kings Cosmetic Clinic.
Established ten years ago, the clinic offers a comprehensive range of innovative laser and cosmetic treatments, some offered by very few other UK practitioners.
The clinic is led by cosmetic physician Dr Peter J Hickman MB, BS.
After qualifying as a doctor in 1975 at St Mary's Hospital, London, he worked in acute hospital medicine for two years and then became a member of a Hertfordshire group medical practice until 1993 when he started his own practice. In 2005 he moved to Kings Grange Estate near Castle Douglas and opened the Kings Cosmetic Clinic there in January 2007.
Laser treatments offered at the Clinic include: Smart laser liposuction; thread vein removal; acne treatment; skin rejuvenation and resurfacing; laser peels; hair removal; mole removal; treatment for rosacea; skin tightening; pigmentation removal (sun damage, age spots); stretch mark reduction; scar reduction and wart and verruca removal.
The Clinic also offers several non-laser treatments: Anti-wrinkle injections; benign naevus (mole) excision; vasectomy; varicose vein removal.
In 2007 Dr Hickman became the first clinician in Scotland trained to offer laser lipolysis, which involves removing unwanted fat and improving body contours. As part of the procedure, the Clinic offers aspiration, gently sucking out the fat released during the lipolysis. A “quick and easy procedure" it is performed under local anaesthetic, with minimal discomfort. Downtime is minimal and, says Dr Hickman, and the client may return to normal activities the next day.
“Our lasers are amongst the most advanced and powerful used in the industry and our clinic is the most experienced in Scotland in providing laser liposuction."
Dr Hickman trained with, and has worked with, the leading exponents of cosmetic laser applications across the UK and in Italy and Slovenia.
“I have had a special interest in dermatology throughout my career," he says, “beginning with working in a dermatology clinic in a district general hospital in the 1980's, and then starting to provide cosmetic treatments in the early 1990's."
Kings Clinic attracts clients from all over the world, although most are from Glasgow and Edinburgh and the north of England as well as Dumfries & Galloway.
“Some of the services we offer are difficult to obtain elsewhere," says Dr Hickman. “Varicose vein treatment and mole removal, for example, are not usually available on the NHS because, rightly, the NHS won't do procedures for cosmetic reasons only.
We also see clients who want a procedure, such as a vasectomy, but want to avoid a long wait. Consultations and treatments are competitively priced."
Kings Cosmetic Clinic is in the process of registering with Healthcare Improvement Scotland, as required by law for all private clinics for the first time from April 1 2017. Dr Hickman's work is also subject to an annual appraisal – this is required by the General Medical Council for all medical practitioners.
Dr Hickman's wife Christine is the receptionist, and working alongside Dr Hickman is Karen Telfer, a local community nurse with experience in theatre work.
Kings Grange House is only half a mile from the A75 and has ample parking. The Clinic has a designated waiting room, consulting room and state of the art operating theatre.
