Energy Company Obligation

The ECO was introduced in January 2013 to reduce the UK's energy consumption and support people living in fuel poverty. It does this by funding energy efficiency improvements worth around £1.3 billion every year. It replaces two previous schemes, the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) and the Community Energy Saving Programme (CESP). ECO places legal obligations on the larger energy suppliers to deliver energy efficiency measures to domestic energy users. TheECO will run until March 2015, supporting the installation of energy efficiency measures in low-income households and areas, and in properties that are harder to treat. It works alongside the Green Deal to give consumers support and funding for energy efficiency improvements in their homes. The Green Deal and the ECO will help reduce carbon emissions from the UK's domestic building stock, which is an essential part of the UK's plan to meet its statutory domestic carbon emission reduction targets by 2050.

Insulation

Internal or external insulation?

Internal wall insulation is done by fitting rigid insulation boards to the wall, or by building a stud wall filled in with mineral wool fiber.
External wall insulation involves fixing a layer of insulation material to the wall, then covering it with a special type of render (plasterwork) or cladding. The finish can be smooth, textured, painted, tiled, paneled, pebble-dashed, or finished with brick slips.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both.
Internal wall insulation:
> is generally cheaper to install than external wall insulation
> will slightly reduce the floor area of any rooms in which it is applied (the thickness of the insulation is around 100mm)
> is disruptive, but can be done room by room
> requires skirting boards, door frames and external fittings to be removed and reattached
> can make it hard to fix heavy items to inside walls – although special fixings are available
> needs any problems with penetrating or rising damp to be fixed first.
> can be applied without disruption to the household
> does not reduce the floor area of your home
> renews the appearance of outer walls
> improves weatherproofing and sound resistance.
> fills cracks and gaps in the brickwork, which will reduce draughts
> increases the life of your walls by protecting the brickwork
> reduces condensation on internal walls and can help prevent damp (but will not solve rising or penetration damp)
> is best installed at the same time as external refurbishment work to reduce the cost
> may need planning permission - check with your local council
> requires good access to the outer walls
> is not recommended if the outer walls are structurally unsound and cannot be repaired.

Boiler Grant

Boiler grants are available under the Government-backed Energy Company Obligation (ECO). The ECO gas boiler grant scheme is aimed at addressing fuel poverty in vulnerable sections of society across the UK. In addition the boiler grant scheme is designed to reduce the levels of carbon emissions being released into the environment by providing energy-efficient gas condensing boilers, which use less energy to heat your home and your hot water.

The free boilers also mean savings of up to £500 per year as heating bills are reduced after the boilers are installed in homes. The boilers carry an A Graded rating in terms of energy-efficiency. Installing a new energy efficient boiler means that your central heating and hot water is heated more cheaply and uses less gas, so reduces your home energy costs. The free boilers available via the boiler grant scheme are energy efficient gas condensing boilers with an A grading according to SEDBUK, the official energy performance rating guidelines for boilers and central heating systems in the UK.
