About

  • Wirral,s LOCAL lawn improvement specialist

Not happy with the appearance of YOUR lawn !

With a bespoke seasonal lawn treatment improvement plan even the most neglected and weed infested lawns can be improved beyond recognition. With careful planning and the correct applications at the right time of year you will be amazed at how your lawn can be " brought back to life".
We believe that not only are we more cost effective than DIY products we take the risk away of damaging your lawn by self applying, most of us have seen the after effects of a mistreatment after a DIY application.
As your local treatment company we don,t just "feed" your lawn we actually make it healthier and control any disease or infestations that a lawn may have, we talk to you about your lawn and between us try to make a difference.
Give us a call you have nothing to lose.

Moss & Thatch

The UK has an ideal climate for moss to establish itself, wet and warm and in many Wirral areas trees giving shade that also helps moss thrive. Extremely difficult to eradicate completely but it can be controlled with the right treatments and more importantly at the right time.
Thatch and moss create a mattress of debris that quite simply starve the grass roots of moisture, air and nutrients so by scarification and aeration it allows your lawn to " Breathe Again" something that your grass roots will respond to and begin to thicken up again.
Why does moss thrive and not grass ? moss has no roots so can sit on the surface taking all the moisture so starving the grass roots from the most important nutrient it can get "Water"

Insects

You can spend as much money as you like on your lawn but if you have grass root eating bugs then you are wasting your hard earned cash.
Some companies seem to think all will be well with a good dose of fertilizer, not the case if you have Leatherjackets eating your lawn or an army of chafer grubs chewing your grass roots away it can look like a rolled up carpet in the worst cases and unless you act quickly to stem the attack then you may well end up literally without a lawn.
Look out for large gatherings of birds on you lawn especially starlings, yes they may well be after worms but they could also be looking for these bugs so be aware!

Seasonal Treatments

It is important that the balance of fertilizers change throughout the year, too much feed at the wrong time of the year will force feed your grass and encourage too much top growth making the leaf fleshly and over a period your lawn will become spongy and need scarifying.
We use numerous fertilizers all with different qualities that feed different parts of the plant at different times of the year and make your lawn "healthy"
We apply a selective herbicide that controls 90% of broadleaf weeds but does not harm your grass, a lot of DIY products not only kills off the weed but also controls the grass, not too good.

Scarification

A rather brutal treatment to your lawn which can be carried out during two windows of opportunity, spring and late summer generally when conditions are warm and wet giving the grass time to recover.
This is needed to give the lawn 3 vital elements back that a thick layer of thatch deprives it of Water - Airflow - Nutrients. Walk across your lawn and if you leave significant foot prints in the lawn then a scarification will be needed.
There are all sorts of tools that remove some moss and it all helps no matter how little is removed but it is very hard work, at Lawn and Weed Wirral we have heavy machinery to do the job so if you don,t fancy doing it yourself then just give us a call.
Be aware that following scarification your lawn will look ugly until it recovers.

Aeration

Over years of foot traffic, rain, wear and tear, etc the surface of any lawn will compact and this starves the grass roots of the vitally needed water, if you take a small core from your lawn you will see that it will be very dry and the root of the grass will be very shallow, aeration allows the nutrients back into the surface and produces tiny fissures or cracks in the soil allowing the roots to develop and become strong.
This process is called aeration and can be spiked or cores removed from the soil depending on what is required and once again this is a very physical process that can be done with heavy machinery by Lawn and Weed Wirral.

Japanese Knotweed

This is a non native very invasive weed that is becoming more and more of a problem due to almost all financial lenders refusing to give loans unless an action plan of treatment is put together and in many cases an IBG is needed if a sale is involved.
We are able to treat this weed over a sustained period and have the backing of a PCA company that can offer the IBG often needed before a sale can go through.
It is VERY important to deal with JK the right way as even the smallest fragment of a live stem can grow into another rhizome.
If you THINK you may have it on your property contact us for an initial free survey.

Disease / Ants

Often disease can be the result of a lawn that has never been looked after or treated and on many occasions a lawn will improve just by applying our seasonal treatments, this over a period toughens the plant up and makes able to resist disease and the harsh and wet winters that are so unpredictable in the uk. If you have any unusual growth or within your lawn don,t leave it hoping it will go away, give us a call.
Lumps in your garden ? appearing during the first warm spell in spring then look under the surface you may have an ants nest, you can treat with again DIY but it is very likely the nest will not be killed, we use a professional product that will eradicate the nest.
