Facts about Sunglasses history

Although you may find it hard to believe, the sunglasses weren't always used to protect people's eyes from the sun. The history of sunglasses dates back to ancient China and Rome. It has been reported that the Roman emperor Nero enjoyed watching gladiator fights through polished gems. In China, sunglasses were used in the twelfth century or even earlier. Sunglasses were first made out of lenses that were flat panels of smoky quartz. These types of sunglasses could not correct vision, or protect from harmful UV rays, but did reduce glare. Chinese judges used the smoky quartz glasses to hide their facial expressions when they interrogated witnesses. In 1936, sunglasses became polarized when Edwin H. Land began using his patented Polaroid filter when making sunglasses. Around this time, even more Americans started buying Cheap Sunglasses. Famous movie stars and musicians also began to wear sunglasses. They started to become not only a way to protect against sun glare, but also a way to be "cool." Sunglasses became a cultural phenomenon, and some people wore them even when it wasn't sunny, or when they were indoors. With World War II brewing in 1936, Ray Ban sunglasses were the first to use anti-glare technique, using polarised lens technology newly created by Edwin H. Land, founder of the Polaroid Corporation. They also designed a slightly drooping frame perimeter to maximally shield an aviator's eyes, which repeatedly glanced downward toward a plane's instrument panel. Fliers were issued the glasses at no charge, and the public in 1937 was able to purchase the model that banned the sun's rays as Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses. A mad scientist named Jim Jannard began questioning the limits of industry standards. For Jim, that meant challenging the limits of conventional thinking. In his garage lab, he started reinventing sunglasses for sports. Few believed it could be done successfully, and most thought the industry's big companies could not be challenged. Jim used innovations from his previous inventions to create "Eyeshades", a design that began an evolution of eyewear from generic accessory to vital equipment. The first world-class competitor to approach the company was Greg LeMond, who became a three-time winner of the Tour de France. Other pros like Scott Tinley, Mark Allen and Lance Armstrong demanded the performance and protection offered by Eyeshades. Oakley Sunglasses feature High Definition Optics (HDO) which provides clarity whilst also protecting the eye. All Oakley glasses must pass two tests before being marketed. The first test consists of firing 1/4 inch steel ball at the glasses at 102 mph, the second test is dropping a 4lb spike on the lense from 4 feet. In both cases the lense must not crack or shatter, or eject from the frame. What helped make sunglasses chic was a clever 1960s' style advertising campaign by the comb and glass firm of Foster Grant. Well-known fashion designers, as well as Hollywood stars, escalated the sunglass craze in the '70s with their brand-name lines. A giant industry developed where only a few decades earlier none existed. As women since ancient times had hidden seductively behind an expanded fan or a dipped parasol, modern women-and men-discovered an allure in wearing sunglasses, irrespective of solar glare. Many blind people now wear sunglasses, and many recognizable celebrities can be found wearing sunglasses. Even fictional characters can be seen wearing them. Today, sunglasses continue to have advances. UV protection has almost become an industry standard, and there are sunglasses available for a variety of sports. There are numerous tints available for sunglasses, and sunglasses have changed styles over the years. Prescription glasses have also been given tints that only appear when the sun's rays hit the glasses. In 2004, Oakley developed a brand of sunglasses that had a built-in digital audio player. Decades of innovation brought new product technologies, blends of science and art that have been awarded more than 540 patents worldwide. Today, Jannard's brand has become the mark of excellence and the solution to challenges facing those who cannot compromise on performance. Sunglasses have come a long way from their early Roman and Chinese history!
