History Lesson

In the 19th Century France the image captured by Joseph Nicephore Niepce of the view from his upstairs window became the world's first photograph. This faint image of the French countryside gave man his first opportunity to 'make time stand still'! Until a little over 20 years ago, the methods used to keep and display photographs were not able to protect those precious treasures from becoming faded, yellow and brittle. This damage is caused by acids found in paper, as well as PVC and platicizers found in album covers which cause a breakdown in the chemical composition of photographs. Popular magnetic type albums compounded the problem by depositing a sticky residue on top of the photographs they were meant to preserve.

Professional photographers have long been able to preserve their work due to their understanding of PH levels and acids, however the necessary knowledge and products were not readily available to all.

Things begin to change in the United States in 1980 when Marlien & AJ Christensen of Utah displayed their family's 50 'Memory Books' at the World Conference on Records in Salt Lake City, Utah. The interest shown by so many people led them to open the country's first retail store, selling archival quality scrapbooking products to the general public. Since that time, retail stores, mail-order companies, online stores and suppliers have been springing up all across the USA, and now in the UK.

Who We Are.

We are a family run business owned and operated by myself ,Stella, my mum Ella and sister Sue. Ella lives in Crowthorne and deals with the orders. I live in Swindon and maintain the website and Sue lives in Oklahoma City, USA and is the creative one who set us on this course.

Having lived in the US for the past 7 years, Sue has been an avid 'scrapper' for some time now and when Mum and I completed our first album pages we too became hooked on this exciting hobby. We now want to give every mum, daughter/grandmother/sister and teenager in the UK a chance to share in the fun with us and that's why Let's get Scrapping! was born.
