About

Looking Good Beauty and Grooming

Looking Good Beauty & Grooming (LGBG) is a family-run business that specialises in IPL treatments as well as more traditional beauty services. By running a boutique home-salon, we are able to minimise overheads so that we can invest in the latest technologies and offer the highest quality services at more affordable prices.

Our Aim

Our aim is to ensure that our clients are made to feel completely comfortable in our salon which has been designed to be homely, relaxing, quirky and professional - rather than the cold, austere and inhibiting feel of some clinics that just end up putting off clients from having treatments - we want you to feel at home in our home. We also provide a confidential service where you can feel at ease visiting us at a time to suit you.

We want to appeal to men, as well as women. With growing awareness of beauty and cosmetic treatments amongst men, this has pushed demand for such services and this can only be good for all - men and presumably your partners too! There may be more of a fight for cosmetic products in the bathroom now, but at least it's in search of "Looking Good".

Our promise is that we will offer you unbiased, honest advice regarding any treatment or service you enquire about. If we are not 100% sure of the level of standard we would want to achieve, we will decline the service, or tell you straight about any limitations, so that you can decide on what to do without any "sales pressure". We can certainly have you Looking Good, but we are still working on how to achieve the miracles :-)

IPL Technology

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) devices are not technically the same as Laser ones, although both work on the principle of emitting intense light-based energy to achieve desired results.

There is an important difference between the light generated by lasers and pulsed light photo devices (IPL). Lasers emit the so-called coherent light (synchronized light waves of the same wavelength), providing very specific and intense targeted energy delivery to a particular skin structure. IPL devices on the other hand, emit a spectrum of various wavelengths of light. To improve targeting and specificity, IPL uses special filters to remove unwanted wavelengths and keep only those in the required narrow range.

IPL Hair Removal

For hair removal light waves ranging from 600-1200nm are used in the Ecolite IPL system - this light is almost exclusively absorbed by the melanin, the skin's natural pigment. As there is more melanin in the hair shaft and follicle than the surrounding skin tissue, more light will be absorbed in those structures. This causes a local rise in temperature within the hair follicle, which causes it to die - once dead, it cannot grow again. However, it is important to note that Ecolite IPL (as with Laser) will only be fully effective on hair in the anagen phase of growth cycle - hair that is actively growing and contains sufficient melanin. It is for this reason that a course of treatments are required, around 4 weeks apart, to ensure that all hair to the targeted location is treated, at the right phase of the growth cycle.

The Ecolite IPL offers clients a virtually painless treatment with permanent, or long lasting results. Compared with other techniques hair removal by Ecolite IPL is highly desirable with no blistering, reddening for prolonged periods, infection after a session.

IPL Skin Treatments

IPL uses short blasts of a polychromatic, high-intensity light to penetrate just below the skin's surface, damaging either the melanin that makes up brown "age spots" or the blood vessels that create broken capillaries. The skin repairs the damage, leaving you with a more even skin tone. IPL also stimulates the production of collagen, which plumps up the skin and gives you a fresher look, and refines or tightens large pores.

The ideal candidate for IPL is someone with light skin who has sun damage, broken capillaries, and some laxity or lack of firmness, and wants to treat all three conditions at the same time. IPL is sometimes referred to as a photo facial. also known as photorejuvenation.

Threading Treatments

Threading has been popular in India and the Middle East for thousands of years and has been common in Asian households for centuries.

Eyebrow threading has been the longstanding technique preferred by Indian movie stars, who are renowned for their beautifully crisp brow lines. However, it has only become commercially available in UK salons, or beauty bars, in the last few years. Threading is not just for the eyebrows, it can be used for the full face and body as well and works equally well for men.

Eyebrow threading is distinct from plucking or waxing because it removes one clean, precise line of hair all at once, making it much quicker and easier to shape the brows. The procedure involves using a thin cotton thread specially designed for threading, which is doubled, then twisted. It is then rolled over areas of unwanted hair, plucking the hair at the follicle level. The thread is held between the teeth of the beautician, while the other end is held firmly with the left hand. The index and middle fingers of the right hand then form a loop in the centre of the string, and the thread is rolled over the surface of the skin, collecting the hairs as it moves.

Eyebrow and Eyelash Tinting

Eyebrow and eyelash tinting uses specially formulated vegetable-based dyes to provide a semi-permanent colour tint, which can dramatically enhance your eyes and take years off your appearance. Not only that, you can ditch your mascara and brow pencils for up to 4 weeks if you want! Men should also take note that it works just as well them. Try it once and you'll be hooked.

Eyelash Extensions

Eyelash extensions are applied in salons by specially trained (and insured) therapists such as our Sabrina. Individual synthetic lashes are carefully bonded to existing lashes and therefore this a a somewhat lengthy process where a full set of 80-100 lashes can take an hour and a half. Alternatively, you can opt for a half set, which gives a more natural look. The main thing to appreciate is that the natural eyelashes will fall out continuously on a 6-8 week cycle - it follows that extensions can therefore on last the same time, not the 12 weeks or more that some salons suggest. You are likely to lose around 12-15 lashes every 2-3 weeks, which is why touch-up appointments are advisable if you want to maintain the "look".

Within the first 24 hours when the glue is still setting, do not touch your lashes, or get them wet. Once set, you won't need mascara! If you use any products on or near the lashes, please ensure they are oil-free.
