Massage for Relaxation and Treatment

Massage is one of the oldest healing arts. Application of soft-tissue manipulation techniques to the body are generally intended to reduce stress and fatigue, and improve circulation. The benefits of massage may be varied and far-reaching.

Massage therapy has been used beneficially for many chronic conditions, ranging from lower back pain, arthritis, bursitis, fatigue, high blood pressure, diabetes, immunological disorders, infertility, through to depression and cigarette addiction.

There are many massage techniques, including so-called 'tui na', which combines techniques of massage and acupressure. The therapist may use different parts of their body to apply pressure, rubbing, percussion or stretches to the patient's body.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a technique in which the therapist inserts fine needles into specific points on the patient's body.

Usually about a dozen points are stimulated in one session, although the number of needles used may range anywhere from one or two up to 20 or more.

The intended effect is to restore health by re-balancing circulation and energy flows in the body.

Modern acupuncture needles are sterile up to the moment of use, and they are disposable, only ever used once.

Many people new to acupuncture ask, 'Does it hurt?'. While there is no guarantee the procedure will be totally painless, often there is so little sensation the patient may even forget the needles are there! On the rare occasion a needle causes excessive discomfort, the patient should tell the therapist so the needles can be readjusted.

Cupping

Cupping involves placing a number of glass 'cups' on the body. The cups themselves are often spherical in shape. The air inside the cup is heated and the cup is then placed against the skin making an air-tight seal. As the air inside the cup cools, the reduced pressure in the cup sucks against the skin.

When combined with use of massage oil, the cups can be slid around, producing a pleasant 'negative pressure' massage effect.

In therapeutic use, cupping is a very quick procedure lasting only a few minutes. Any after-marks on the skin disappear after half an hour.

Herbal Remedies

In China, herbal medicine is the primary method of therapy.

There are about 500 medicinal herbs, but only about 200 are frequently used. Herbs are often prescribed in formulations for specific conditions. Typically a herbal formula will contain between 3 and 25 different herbs. The therapist determines the formula tailored to the patient's condition.

Traditionally, herb formulations are boiled to make an infusion. Depending on the purpose, the liquor may be drunk or applied externally.

Modern practice is to make formulations into tablets or capsules for internal use. For external application, formulations are made into oils, creams or poultices.

Reflexology

Reflexology applies massage and pressure to one part of the body to stimulate benefits elsewhere in the body. Usually it is applied to the feet, but the patient's ears and hands are also sometimes used in this way.

Benefits of reflexology include relaxation, reduced stress, and improved circulation. Other benefits may include relief of backache, stiff neck, asthma, siusitis, constipation, IBS, insomnia and other conditions.

Ear Candling

Ear candling, also known as ear coning or thermal-auricular therapy, is a folk remedy said to assist the natural clearing of earwax (cerumen), and help in removing toxins from a person's ear.

A hollow candle is placed in the ear, and the other end is lit. As the candle burns down the debris inside the ear is drawn out into the candle by the flow of air through the hollow core.

Ear candles are effective in reducing earache, itchiness in the ears, headache, migraine, ear noise, stress and nervous tension.
