First established in 1124, the Melville Estate has witnessed 10 centuries of Britain’s colourful history. The current castle was built in 1786 on the site of the original medieval castle, designed by the famous architect James Playfair for the 1st Viscount Melville.

As an estate of significant stature, there are a few stories to tell, including the infamous relationship of Mary Queen of Scots & Rizzio, her Italian secretary. Queen Victoria, King George IV and Sir Walter Scott have also resided at the castle.
