About Us

The club is based at the Gleneagles centre in New Marske and lessons are taught by Sensei Richard Glass, 2nd Dan in Aikido.

We are a friendly group which teaches Aikido and self defence. New Marske Dragons was formed in August 2010 and has grown significantly in size and reputation in the local area.

The style of Aikido that is taught may be classed as progressive as we are always looking for ways to improve and not just repeat what has gone before.

Students work in a cooperative manner rather than a competitive one which enhances personal development.

WHAT IS AIKIDO?

Aikido is a japanese martial arts developed by Morihei Ueshiba, Aikido can be translated as meaning 'The way of Harmony'.

Ueshiba's goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury.

Aikido is performed by the motion of the attacker and redirecting their force rather than opposing it head on like most other martial arts.

The practitioner leads the attackers momentum using entering and turning movements. The techniques are completed with various throws or joint locks.
