The cost of hiring a consultant for your business

One of the barriers that gets in the way of businesses, whatever the size, of hiring a consultant to help them make change happen in their business is the price of the consultant. I know there has been a lot of bad press in the past about consultants and the real value that they offer. This has been something that has been on my mind for many years now as I worked for other consulting houses. For me I feel that as consultants we should be paid for the value that we deliver to our clients, but that is not the way the "traditional" consulting model works. What tends to happen is you speak to a consultant about your issue and then they tell you their rates. These rates tend to be in the order of at least £1000/day - if they are any good at what they do. Now once they come and work for you they have no incentive to finish the work ... okay this is not strictly true because for the more altuistic of consultants the joy of doing great work within time and budget is an incentive. But if we think about the financial incentive this model of being paid by the day or the hour does not lend itself well to offering the best value to the client, which is what we as consultants should all strive for...so model do I suggest.
