Sited just up the road from the The Ashbourne Hotel is Thornton Abbey founded as a priory in 1139 for the Augustinian Canons, it was elevated to an abbey in 1148 because of it's wealth and influence. Visitors cannot fail to be impressed with the massive brick-built gatehouse as it looms into sight like some sturdy, military fortress guarding the entrance to The Abbey site.
