Both I and my girlfriend went to the restaurant a few days ago.The restaurant was not even half full so we expected food to arrive in good time and the waiters to have an easy job. First of all, the table was too small for two. Infact, if you wanted to eat in proper Thai style and order more than a single dish at once, you mays well ask for a whole table for yourself - it was extremely crampt. Got served and made our food orders - there were 5 different dishes asked for. The first two came after about 20 minutes - quite a long time considering they were both small and only 'starters'. The rice did not come with them so we asked the waiter. Nothing for 5 minutes. We asked another waiter as our starters were getting cold. Then after a while, the rice finally came. (It was only steamed rice and we requested it when making our orders!). The first two dishes were OK in terms of taste but not much more than that. They were also very small in size compared to other Thai restaurants in Edinburgh so value for money was poor. We asked one of the waitresses (Thai) if we ordered satays from the menu before and if not, could she add it in. This was spoken in both English and Thai (my girlfriend being Thai). She said OK and went off. A few minutes after, my girlfriend asked another waitress if we could have the other dishes together at the same time. Que the waitress being rude to her and also slightly rude to me explaining why they did not come together. I'll let her off speaking to me since her first language is not English, though I cannot excuse her being rude as she spoke in Thai to my girlfriend. Extremely unpleasant. The next 2 dishes that came were worse than the first ones. One was hardly touched since it was such a disaster and the other was extremely medicore. Again, taste aside, compared to other Thai restaurants here the value for money was again poor. Oh, and the chicken satays failed to turn up. When those dishes were collected by the same waitress we asked about the satays, I asked if they were still to come. What followed was not much of a reply and she shuffled off. 10 minutes later, we ordered dessert. Normally I wouldn't order dessert but after 5 poor dishes I was about as hungry as when I came in to the restaurant. Value for money was better than the previous dishes and quality was better - though that's hardly saying much at all. We asked for the bill after finishing dessert. Surprise surprise, the satays were not even marked down. What the hell was the waitress doing? To summarise: Value for money was extremely poor. Service from one waitress was non existent and didn't even put down our satay order after asking her 2 times. Service from the other waitress was ultimately unpleasant and rude, and left a damper on the night even though it had barely started. Food was poor. Table was too small and crampt. Waiting times for food was also poor even though the restaurant wasn't even half full. ps. When the bill came it made a statement that service charge was not included (as per normal for all customers). Easy to see why !! Lucky to get 1/5 stars. I will never go back and recommend others to try elsewhere.

Lai Thai

Value

Lai Thai restaurant has an appealing interior with its bright and friendly decor and service. I particularly enjoyed the relaxing ambiance, helped along with authentic thai music. Its definately one of the best thai restaurants in scotland...and i've dined at many! The quick, friendly service from the waitress' coupled with the devine cuisine resulted in a fantastic thai experience for myself and my stomach! Value for money was extremely good since you recieve alot of good quality food for decent prices, the idea of bringing your own bottle is superb and adds to the friendly character the restaurant boasts. Overall, a great dining experience with no complaints! bon apetit!
