If winter gives you snow make snowmen

It seems to be snowing and the news has never been funnier. "Gridlock, don't travel unless it's life or death, schools closed" How do people, as my father used to call it, "on the continent" manage year after year? Pah! Preparation, preparation, preparation. If you’re driving, think ahead; drive slower, brake earlier and more gently, pack some essentials, and yes, a spade, some warm clothing and a torch ARE essential in these conditions. and the list goes on, BUT you don't need me to tell you this - grandmother sucking eggs comes to mind. What does this mean to business? Well, people will be off work and generally business will be slack as a result. How can we capitalise on this? Do the thinks we have done ages ago but never seem to get round to: work on your business strategy, redesign your website, look at marketing campaigns, implement new it systems. Be smart about now and reap the benefits later when things get back to normal and the recession becomes something the papers talk about in past terms - it's just around the corner folks! Making the best of the situation now. As our cousins across the water say, "if life gives you lemons, make lemonade"

Around the world in 365 days

As the winter nights are nipping around my ankles, I find myself wondering where the year has gone. There's been talk of swine flue and a recession, but what has been real and what has been the figment of a presses over-active imagination? The swine flu; well I'll guess we will have to wait and see BUT the government has covered it's ass but stockpiling vaccinations, so I guess we are covered, just in case! The recession: I know a lot of people have lost their jobs and have been put in a nasty situation as a result, but where does the blame lie? I think that the press has created a state of fear that has made businesses draw in their purse strings and be over cautious. Of course there have been some real business casualties along the way BUT they have tended to be ones that have been hearing the death knells for a while and have been kept alive by the banks milking their lucrative cash-cows, or they have been healthy businesses that have over expanded using the banks money to drive expansion only to have the tap turned off, even though they have healthy order books. Do I blame the banking industry? Does two and two equal four? You bet-ya!I've visited over half a dozen countries on business the past twelve months and without exception they have all had some kind of economic downturn, but their press have reported fact not speculated or sensationalised so they are recovering much faster. We have been forced to live in a state of fear. Recovery - The situation is never clear cut because it relies on businesses spending money on the things we need rather than holding back ‘just in case'. It's a little like being stuck in a traffic jam (perhaps on the M6, again): if everyone in the jam drew away at the same time, accelerated at the same speed and changed gear in unison we would all be back on our way quickly BUT the reality is this isn't going to happen. We are busy watching each other to see who's going to make the first move - ‘what are THEY are doing?' If we see enough positive motion then we too will get on the bandwagon.I think what I'm trying to say here is, have faith and stand your ground. The country is in a good position right now. Markets are gaining confidence, business are seeing the green routes of recovery, the pound is low BUT this means exports are healthy (lets make more "stuff" in the UK shall we!) and businesses are peaking from beneath the surface once more. This blog has changed shape and has ended up saying something very different to my intended subject BUT in the training and development world I see companies that are taking positive steps forward. The world is a different place as a result of thei downturn and I hope we will all be more efficient as a result. Right now organisations are taking the advantage by investing in their people, motivating them, giving them the skills they need in order to do their jobs more effectively. Here come the plug: People Business Consulting provided real world training for a real world at a real world cost, and we love helping people

I was sent on this training day by my boss and expected yet another day bored to my bones. The trainer was great, listened to what we said and made the day fun. We used something called the SDI and as a red (want to get things done, sometimes at the cost to others) I was chuffed we had plenty of tasks which made the subject come alive. Not bad at all! Cheers Keith
