Pilates is a form of exercise that combines stretching and bodyweight exercises (performed on a mat) with spring resistance work (performed on special equipment). At beginner level it is low impact and is therefore effective for injury rehabilitation, but as it strengthens core muscles and promotes better posture, strength and suppleness, it is also useful for dancers, runners, cyclists and other sports enthusiasts.
Liat Ogden was a professional dancer for ten years and used pilates to help her maintain fitness, strength and suppleness before retraining as a pilates instructor. She is a member of the Pilates Foundation UK.
