I was justly critical of Pivo when it first opened and won't revisit old ground so just read my previous review if you want the background.Happily when I revisited the place itself, most of the irritating gaffes had been ironed out. Services was prompt and efficient, all of the beers were dispensed without the previous tortuous small trickle or (conversly) mounds of froth that necessitated a wait of 10 minutes for a single pint.More good news in that they now stock the iconic Meantime beers from Greenwich and a hangover friendly Bernard Light lager which has all of the taste of the standard Bernard but only 3.8% ABV.Another bar to add to the ale trail then...

I'm not going to dispute the general feeling of it being a good choice for interesting beers (though it's nothing compared to York's Ackhorne or Evil Eye) and having a generally nice atmosphere, but the customer service in this place is indefensible.I've been in a couple of times in the past and quite enjoyed it (pray for the lack of space to sit down). I did however, notice that when the bar staff get the impression that you are drunk, they rip you off. When buying a half pint, for example, i noticed about an inch missing off the top (with a lot of head). I wouldn't have cared, but last week, it became very obvious that the excuse for a manager was actually persuading his staff to rip off customers. We ordered a whisky and coke - they had no coke in the fridge so had to go upstairs to get some - and then 20 minutes later ordered the same drink. Only this time, they couldn't be bothered to go upstairs, so gave us a whisky and tonic. We brought it up to the girl who ordered it and she went to complain, saying that they had asked for it with coke. The fat-ass behind the bar called the manager over, who lied and said he was right next to us when the order was made (we know this to be a lie because we were stood right next to a wall at the time and we were talking to the random guy standing next to us - and besides, has anyone in the history of bars ever ordered a whisky and tonic?!?!?!?!). He said we could get the whisky and coke if we paid for it again. Now, I'm not a fan of devout customer services, all smile etc. but when the manager of a local pub rips off customers just to save a bit of cash for himself, I take it very personally. Let me assure you, I will never go back there and I suggest nobody else does either, but if you do, I'd go so far as to say check your change and bring a measuring jug just to make sure you get the right measurement. What reminded me to write this review was walking past it today, someone had put one of their windows through, too right. I only hope whoever did it didn't pay for it, just a way at getting back at a shit excuse for a small pub. Go to York's many other interesting beer pubs before you so much as think of coming here.

Always with friends

We visited last weekend with friends and the bar was very busy but comfortable. The staff were all very knowledgable of probably the largest range of beers found in York. It does get rather busy at weekends but we found this created a great atmosphere. As one of the other reviews said, some of the beers are slow at serving but this is typical for some high pressure continental styles (wheat beers etc) - But well worth waiting for!!!Certainly a place for the beer lovers and we can't wait to visit again when we are next in York.Lovely bar with great beers in a beautiful old building.

Get your act together...

I have been in several times now in the hope that the service in this place would improve and oh boy it needs to...Yes it's friendly with a good choice, but why does it take over 10 mins to get served and why haven't they sorted out their taps yet as they are as appalling now as they were when in its first week - and I thought that teething problems. Because they haven't got the gas right all you get is half a pint of froth which makes pouring a real pain and waiting so much the longer.Last night (Saturday) there were 5 girls behind the bar who were having a ball - cooking panini's for themselves and leaving punters waiting and glasses piling up...then they rung last orders at 11.30pm - on a Saturday...!!You get the impression that the owners are enthusiastic amateurs playing at running a bar - just ask other bars that they supply about the problems they constantly have getting supplies of Bernard - and they are the main importers - Biltmore are so sick of lack of supplies they are jumping ship to someone more reliable...Pity - its a great venue with great beers - it just needs professionals behind the scenes...

No, no, no! Don't go to Pivo! It's already getting too 'discovered'. Oh, those fruity beers. Conversation with friend:Friend: I could drink this in a minute, it tastes so light and fruity.Me: Um, maybe that's not such a good idea.I like the rustic look upstairs and am looking forward to the beer garden which looks lovely out the window but, unfortunately, too cold at the moment. And, the urinal in the men's room is a gargoyle! I wish they'd put some Gargoyles in the ladies toilet...I'm jealous.

Just opened and brand new to york, a pub with a great selection of Belgian beer! and if beer is your thing you should be here. Generally frequented by a really nice after work crowd taking advantage of the frequently reviewed, renewed and enthused beer selection. This used to be a travel shop... now it is much improved as an intimate bar area with more seting upstairs. A cafe scene by day at night its posh beer is the talk of the town! Talk to the bar staff they are all more than knowedlgeable about their product! there's a reason why they do not serve the Raspberry beer by the pint and only in half pint rounds, this stuff is rich, and smoothie like! And anything more than a half pint would be more than uncomfortable on the palate and digestive system alike! the oneous here is very much on the beer, their wine selection is well limited, and your lucky to get a G&T from the rest of their selection. But you would not come here for such drinks, stick instead to the exciting and well thought out beer menu. oh and did i mention the free wifi!
