Types of therapy offered.

Sometimes it's hard to find the right words, sometimes there just aren't any words for how we feel, there's just an seemingly inescapable feeling. To help in these situations, we here at Play Matters Counselling service offer more than just talking therapy.

Play is the natural medium of communication for young children so for them we provide Play Therapy. Using puppets, sand tray, toys and clay, as well as drawing and active storytelling - we help children manage tricky emotions, explore difficult life experiences and process traumatic events. By working through difficulties in this way the child is able to tell their story and explore their way of seeing the world and their way of being in it.

Creative therapy is a more focused approach to the therapeutic process for older children and teens. While still using creative resources to explore feelings and difficulties the work is more directed at specific areas of concern.

Talking therapy is a part of all these process.

Anger: The Tip of the Iceberg a workshop for parents.

Does your child have angry outbursts that seemingly come out of nowhere?
Do you sometimes wonder if your own relationship with anger is impacting how you respond?
Do you wish you could have better conversations with your children about feelings rather than just arguments?

This workshop will help you creatively explore your own anger alongside your child's. We will explore anger's origins in terms of our brain function and our fight, flight, freeze response, through the use of creative therapy techniques we will look at how we can help develop emotional literacy so we can help them gain awareness of what's under the surface of their anger, so they can better regulate and get their feelings met in more appropriate ways.

Summer Actvities for ages 4-6, 5-7 and 7-11

We are hosting a range of activities over the summer involving our speciality, creativity!

24/07 is our Dexterity Club: Fine Motor Skills. Fun games, activities and challenges designed to enhance hand-eye co-ordination, concentration and communication. 2pm-3pm for ages 5-7.

26/07 Our Therapeutic Creativity Group. If you missed us during term-time now is the perfect time to give us a try. This weeks art material is Clay. 2pm-3pm for ages 7-11 AND 3.30pm-4.30pm for ages 5-7.

31/07 This time parents get to join in the fun! Therapeutic Creativity Group for ages 4-6 and their parents. Shared play is a great way to enhance the bond with your child and help develop healthy attachment which is vital for good mental health and wellbeing. Particularly beneficial for adopted children and their parents and any child experience family breakdown or stressful circumstances. This weeks theme is Construction: Make and build together. 2pm-3pm.

02/08 Our Therapeutic Creativity Group continues. This week's art medium is Puppets. 2pm-3pm for ages 7-11 AND 3.30pm-4.30pm for ages 5-7.

07/08 This time parents get to join in the fun! Therapeutic Creativity Group for ages 4-6 and their parents. This weeks theme is Sorting: Problem solving, communication and concentration. 2pm-3pm.

09/08 Our Therapeutic Creativity Group continues. This week's art medium is paint and we shall be creating some mini masterpieces. 2pm-3pm for ages 7-11 AND 3.30pm-4.30pm for ages 5-7.

28/08 It's back! Dexterity Club: Fine Motor Skills. Fun games, activities and challenges designed to enhance hand-eye co-ordination, concentration and communication. 2pm-3pm for ages 5-7. At 3.30pm-4.30pm there is a special Get Ready For School Dexterity Club for ages 4/5 and their parents.

30/08 The last in our summer holiday series of Therapeutic Creativity Group. This week's art medium is drama. Create stories and act them out without the pressure of an audience. 2pm-3pm for ages 7-11 AND 3.30pm-4.30pm for ages 5-7.
