Disaster

My advice to anyone is DO NOT USE Ramshaw's Removals. In Feb 2011 I called them for a quote for my elderly aunt. She has very bad health problems and recently lost her husband. She is quite stressed so we have been helping her move to the city from her rural home. On my first call to ‘Andy' the boss, I described the items to be moved. I itemised the furniture and discussed the amount of clothes, ornaments and other small items. He did NOT offer to visit the property as stated on the website and said he had enough information to do a quote as it was a small job. I was told the price would be £295 including VAT plus £200 for packing, so about £500 all in for what he said was an 8 hour job. I was also told to expect uniformed professional staff who would pack everything into appropriate boxes. I was also told they would bring hanging rails for the clothes. He also said they would come in a large truck at 9am. My aunt paid the deposit, but when the final bill came they had charged £295 PLUS VAT, and £250 PLUS VAT for packing. The total bill was shown as over £650. She queried it and they eventually knocked £100 off after she tried to cancel the job, but not before insulting several other moving companies she had quotes from. The day before the move they DEMANDED the balance before the work was done, then said the crew would be late. The crew turned up at 10am in a Luton box van. They were not uniformed. One was wearing tracksuit bottoms and sports trainers. The first thing they asked for was a cuppa. I felt sorry for them as they didn't finish their last job until midnight the night before so were tired. I should point out that UK and EU law requires an 11 hour break between shifts, but not at Ramshaw's. Immediately there was a problem. They had a single wardrobe box, despite my aunt having two wardrobes full of clothes. When they rang the depot ‘Andy' demanded my aunt pay another £200 over the phone. Total disaster. Stay away.
