About

About Us

Award Winning Cottages and Bed and Breakfast in a quiet un-spoilt valley in the North York Moors National Park just eight miles from the coast and Whitby. Red House Farm is located in Glaisdale Dale just 400m from the village of Glaisdale and consists of a group of buildings dating from the Mid 17th century. We no longer operate as a farm but do run a smallholding and have Longhorn cows, hens, ducks and have the occasional pony running around but no tractors or modern farm buildings. There is excellent walking from the doorstep, a bridleway which is featured in several books runs through our property and Wainwright's coast-to-coast footpath runs within a quarter mile of the farm. The Heritage Coast walk is just a short drive away.

There is a pond on the property which is deep (but fenced and gated) so toddlers beware! Older children (and Dad's) seem to enjoy catching the rudd - we have yet to see anyone catch the carp or tench. We also have stabling for up to four horses (depending on the time of year) in addition to three/four ponies and with easy access to the moor, the bringing of ponies is becoming quite popular.

Things To Do Around Red House Farm

Walking and sight-seeing are the most popular activities for the area, but we are happy to arrange or provide contact numbers for fishing, riding or mountain bike hire. If you wish to fish for salmon or sea trout, it is wise to book in advance during the autumn. Although there are sections of the river open to the public, these tend to get heavily used when the salmon are running.Or take a ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Grosmont to Pickering. With its magnificent steam engines and beautiful rural stations, it´s like taking a step back in time--a holiday you won´t forget! You are within a short driving distance of Goathland (Aidensfield of "Heartbeat" TV series), the coast (Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay, Ravenscar, Staithes), Helmsley, Riveaulx Abbey and many other very interesting places.

Games Room

Adults and over 16s can enjoy a game of snooker in our shared adult games room next to The Threshing Barn. Under 16s are allowed only under strict adult supervision.

A dartboard, dominoes, and walking guides are also provided.
The wood stove can give a cosy warmth in cool weather.

The Area

North York Moors National Park

The North York Moors was designated as a National Park nearly 60 years ago in 1952, because of its beautiful unspoilt countryside, its magnificent coastline, and its wealth of architectural interest. The speciality of the NYMNP is that it contains not only the largest tract of heather moorland in all of England and Wales, but also has a great variety of landscapes, woodland, forests, high coastal cliffs, rivers and wetlands and the traditionally farmed dales with their picturesque drystone walls.
Esk Valley

Red House Farm, Glaisdale, is situated in the Esk Valley (the River Esk being Yorkshire's only salmon river) and is about 8 miles from the coast at Whitby. Red House Farm is in the quiet peaceful valley of Glaisdale Dale, ideal for walking, riding and, I think cycling, although most visitors look at the hills and argue. We are in easy reach of the coast, and historic cities such as York are only an hours drive away from Red House Farm. The village pub is about a 3/4 of a mile away from Red House Farm and serves meals all days. The village has a good butcher's shop, but for something special, it's worth taking a trip to Radford's Butchers and Delicatesson in Sleights, which is twenty minutes away from Red House Farm. It's a good idea to bring a cool box to stock up. The village shops in both Glaisdale and Lealholm can see to all your needs so your holiday cottage at Red House Farm could be stocked ready for your arrival. Self catering without trouble! We are happy to arrange this if you give us a week's notice. Whitby seafood is well known, as the eating places in and around the town are many and varied with the upper end showing much improvement lately.
