Ri Cruin is situated in Kilmartin Glen just a mile south of the village of Kilmartin and at the north end of the Moine Mhor - the great Moss. The Glen boasts a wide variety of Neolithic burial Cairns and standing stones, and the house takes its name from Ri Cruin Cairn which is situated just in front of The Factor's house.
Ri Cruin makes an ideal base to explore the beauty of Mid Argyll, as it is situated in the heart of some of the most stunning scenery in Scotland, and to relax and unwind in our fresh air.
There is plenty of opportunity for walking in the forests or on the coast, touring, fishing, sailing, boat trips, riding, exploring history, golfing, watching the local birds and wildlife, driving to local towns such as Lochgilphead and Oban - or just doing nothing!
The house and steadings were built in about 1850, and were originally part of Poltalloch Estate, having various uses and latterly being the Factor's House. In 1949 Sandy Gordon's grandparents left their home on the Island of Mull and bought the house and 100 acres of ground from the Malcolms of Poltalloch. The family have lived there ever since, Sandy having returned to farm the land after completing agricultural college in the 1970s.
About 50 sheep are now kept, including some black Hebrideans, and in spring there are often pet lambs to feed. Meet Mrs McClean and Katie-Morag, the two Highland Cows. Sandy is a fisherman as well and in season fresh lobster, crab, prawns and clams can be supplied to order. The Bullock Shed and The Stable have been awarded the Scottish Tourist Board's Four Star Award.
