About

Welcome

This traditional dynamic Japanese self-defence art requires no use of physical strength.

It relies instead on technique to neutralise an attack and, as such, is suited to men, women and children of all ages.

Shun Poo Kan Aikido has been established for over 30 years and has regular classes in Wombourne, Bridgnorth, Sedgley, Codsall, Wigan, Hinckley and North Carolina, U.S.A.

We teach traditional Aikido and are recognised by the British Aikido Board, the governing body in the United Kingdom.

About Aikido

Aikido, meaning "The Way of Harmony of Spirit", is a Japanese system of self-defence whose origins can be traced back to the 12th century. It was created by Morihei Ueshiba (1883 - 1969) as a basis for both physical and spiritual development.

As a purely defensive art it does not meet violence with violence and yet maintains its martial origins. Aikido techniques are mainly joint immobilisation and throws using the opponents strength and momentum against themselves. Practices with Bokken (sword), Jo (staff) and Tanto (knife) serve to assist understanding of techniques and their development.
