Brilliant!
My family and I have used the Suprriergate Centre for many years, and it remains consistently excellent. To begin with the surroundings are brilliant - a huge, lofty old church that's been very sympathetically restored with white walls and simple decor, and retaining many of the original features such as carvings in the walls, the pulpitt, the old church clock etc. Last week when I visted in the summer I was able to sit out on a small table and watch the world go by in the sun - lovely! Secondly, the staff are always very friendly and helpful. Thirdly the food prices are very reasonable for a city centre location. Finally the food is always excellent - everything from proper-cooked jacket potatoes to home baked cakes. Fantastic!

Spurriergate Centre
Spurriergate Centre is a wonderful place to go for a drink and cake or a more substantial meal. Located at the end of the main shopping area (Coney Street), Spurriergate is a welcome stop in the midst of the busyness.The converted church has been beautifully altered to house the cafe, a fairtrade shop as well as mezzanine seating and shop.The food is homemade, good tasting and good value. The desserts are especially tempting.The centre is very family friendly and welcoming, making it a favourite for parents and their children. Whilst the parents enjoy time to have a drink and chat, their kids are able to play in the play area (formerly the altar area).If you have emotional needs, the centre also provides a listening ear through volunteers, counselling services and prayer.

Great Find
I had been living in York for quite a while before I actually went in to the Spurriergate centre, and I am very glad I did! The building itself is the first thing that you notice, it is beautiful and has a lot to look at. There is a fair trade shop near the entrance, which sells a nice variety of small items, with a few bigger things upstairs on the mezzanine floor.The food and drink itself is very good. The sandwiches are very big and taste fresh, amd the scones aren't too bad either! The main down sides are that it can get very busy, sometimes so that you can't get a seat! And some of the items are a little bit pricey, but overall it is a very nice, and different, stop off for a cuppa.

EXCELLENT - THE BEST!!!!
I would like to add our praises to the Spurriergate Centre, our regular port of call in the city. Many York people use this facility because it offers home made food, choices of tea, freshly brewed coffee and free top-ups on request.The staff are a mix of regulars and volunteers, but all are spirt-filled individuals who are there if you need them. Yes, drinks, food and spiritual needs are on offer. If you have a need for prayer, just ask and you can use a prayer room upstairs and someone will pray with you. If you just want a good, value homely place, then this is it. Why sit in a plastic, sameness fast food place when this cafe offers historic stone around it with stained glass windows, friendly staff and plenty of history! Just visit when in York. GUARANTEED!!! Got a problem ask the staff for some prayers and a quiet room to discuss things, but if on a happy note just enjoy the fresh coffe, freshly made cake and buns and delightful hot meals,This centre is of all my reviews, this has to rate SUPERB! You will not be disappointed!!! Enjoy!!!Honest, just try it and see

Thriving Cafe in a converted 12th Century church
If you're seeking an alternative to the generic homogenised Coffee giants that dominate our High Streets then you can do no better than patronise thriving ventures such as the Spurriergate Centre. Rather than let the beautiful but damp and moribund city centre church of St Michael be sold to developers for yet another soulless yuppy whim, the C of E decided to try their hand at ethical retailing and well done to them for that.They sell nothing but Fair Trade beverages and deliver wholesome home-cooked hot snacks and cakes and do it all with a touch of panache. It is part-staffed by volunteers so occassionally the service is not a polished as it could be but it's always welcoming, friendly and "can-do". The surroundings are wonderfully atmospheric and crisply decorated combining clean lines with 12th Century medieval stone and the result is a totally satifying experience.
