Fancy a change of spices?

Probably would never have made it here if the Anchor and Hope across the road hadn't been so full, but I'm very glad we did. We have been here and to the sister place on Borough High Street quite a few times and never been disappointed. Particularly after a pint, its nice to replenish the old spice levels.A Turkish friend tells me it is not as authentic as some places and calls it Turkish food geared towards UK palates; that's fine by me though and hardly different than the Indian or Chinese places that line our High Streets.Go for the specials if you like a big, spicy plate of meaty goodies. We'd probably go more often if they had a bigger menu as, good as it is, its nice to have a change.

Good for Pre/post Theatre/IMAX

Tas is a Turkish restaurant within walking distance of the Old/Young Vic and the IMAX in Waterloo. Whilst Turkish might not be the first thing that springs to mind for most when thinking of a night out for a meal, I would urge the sceptics to give it a try as you might be surprised. They have an extensive menu including a number of very good vegetarian dishes and some very good value set menu specials made up of items off the regular menu, just cheaper! All in all, for a pre or post theatre/IMAX dinner Tas is a good food, good value gem hidden amongst the 24 convenience stores on the Cut.

Fresh, tasty and affordable

I love the atmosphere is Tas - it's laidback, unhurried and friendly, with an interesting menu to please both carnivores and veggies alike. My personal favourite is the meze, or "renk" menu, where you get 8 or 9 different dishes including hummous, tabule, kalamari, falafel and a delicious aubergine dish, plus bread, and the baklava is to die for. You can cap it all off with a potent Turkish coffee at the end of your meal. At the weekend there's often live guitar music while you dine. Tas on the Cut is just a short walk from Waterloo, and there are several others to choose from, including one close to the British Museum which is also recommended.

Good for visiting cousins arriving at Waterloo!

It's not often I enjoy a good and fairly priced restaurant in London. But it's exactely what we came across last week-end when we went to have dinner at Tas, a Turkish eaterie on The Cut, close to Waterloo station -perfect to finish a day of rambling through the capital and visit some attractions such as Tate Modern. We had several dishes, all quite pleasing: a lentil soup, grilled chicken, hummous, falafel, tabouleh salads, etc... All mediteranean dishes, simple and honest, washed with a good rosé (Don Jacobo Rijoa, £15.35).Best news was the price: the menus are less than a tenner, making it possible to eat for under £20, a rare feat. Even the teenagers we had with us were pleased!!!Highly recommended!

A great place for a leisurely Sunday lunch if you want to talk to an old or new friend. OutsidePleasantly decorated and understated. Not luxurious but green tubs either side of the door.FoodLamb is their speciality. For my main course I chose chicken with ginger. Didn't really taste the ginger, but was happy enough. Ordered a side dish of couscous. My companion's lamb (kebab - or a work like it - looked more like huge minced meat sausages) dish came with couscous but he changed that to rice. DessertsBaklava. I was told you accent the first syllable. Three pieces, really good nuts on top as well as inside, looked green like pistacchio. Not over-sweet and sickly. Just right.CoffeeI had Turkish coffee. You have to specify how sweet you want it. It's really thick and sludgy, in a small cup, no room for milk. You don't need to add sugar as you've already specified medium or whatever.Speed and TimingVery leisurely. We arrived about 1.30 Sunday lunchtime, ad no starter, but were not rushed were able to sit chatting until about 4.30.DecorSlightly echoing. Able to absorb children without noise disturbing you. Upmarket spartan. White. Cloths. SeatingGood, comfortable high back chairs. Plus a little seated waiting area in the window by the door. Tables for two by the far wall, well away from the nearest table, offering total privacy.StaffForeign language staff efficient enough, no conversation.CleanlinessYou can see them cooking at the back which is always fun and reassuring. Makes the place look bigger, too. DrinksMy companion was driving and not drinking so I looked for a glass of wine. Glass of champagne or I had a pink Zinfandel and lots of bottles. ToiletsNeither wonderful nor awful. Large roomy one person toilet suitable for a wheelchair. Containing a private washbasin in the toilet which is always handy for washing, cleaning teeth, whatever you like, without other watching.LocationVery convenient.Next to Southwark station. Or Waterloo. Bakerloo tube line or Northern. Only three to five minutes walk from the back left of Waterloo station (exit 4) near Marks and just beyond Tie Rack. From Waterloo The Old Vic theatre is on the corner. Cross the lights in front of the Old Vic and follow the sign to Southwark station and there it is on your right. What else to do in the area? A few yards away is a theatre bookshop with performances and secondhand books downstairs.Waterloo station has shops open on Sunday. I passed a musician playing a hurdy-gurdy which lots of people videoed as they passed before dropping a few coins in his hat. He was happy to explain how it worked to passers-by. He told me he was featured on the Waterloo station website.
